Thinking of helping my friend get a forum going on his site. I'm looking for something we can get for free (legally). He's got access to a SQL server and PHP. I looked at Invision board but it requires mySQL. Anyone got any advice on which one is the best option? Thanks.

You're talking about just uploading an image file to a post right? Invision Board, Ikonboard are ones that I have personally used.

nice lots of good info here. What sucks for my friend is that his host is limited to SQL server. Supposedly Invision board is making SQL server support a top priority in their next release so I may just wait till then.

Switching hosts isn't an option at this time..he's a college student and his host is a good friend that doesn't charge us :)

Sounds like a good idea, I would also wait. So far IB has been great, just wish I knew how much bandwidth I'm going to use this morning. February 1 - 4 I used 542MB :Q

Is this just from the forum? That seems awfully high for just a php forum.... it doesn't look like you use many pictures either.

No offense, but it seems very "out-dated" compared to other ones that are free (like phpBB and InvisionBoard). Seems fast enough though.

Sorry I should have clarified. In 4 days I have gone through 542MB bandwidth but that's for EVERYTHING from initial setup the forums, FTPing, webmail, incoming/outgoing e-mail, everything not just the forums. After the initial rush of new members settles down I think the bandwidth will level off and become more steady. I'm committed to providing whatever webhosting resources are necessary for the website.

If you're talking about the appearance, that could easily be changed by swapping in a new stylesheet. It also supports picture uploads, which phpBB doesn't appear to.

I run a FuseTalk forum like this through my website (link below), but it runs off MS Access (no traffic anyway - was just playing).

my forum only runs on mysql and postreSQL.

it is phpbb

i dont think they are many free forums that run on MS SQL. is this his own server? install mysql isnt hard to do.

snitz is ASP based and runs on MS SQL, ACCESS, MYSQL

phpBB runs on MS SQL 7/2000 Link

Database Server Support
phpBB uses a database abstraction layer to enable seamless support of several database servers:
MySQL 3.2x,
PostgreSQL 7.x,
Microsoft SQL Server 7/2000
Microsoft Access (via ODBC)
...with more databases available in the future.
