Anyone ride their horse on the street, and get hassled?

I was driving in a farming community, a couple of towns over, and I came across someone riding a horse. I stopped my vehicle, and waited for the rider to wave me on, as that is the law here in MA, at least on basic two-lane roads.

There's still a lot of people riding horses in these quaint New England towns.

While it may technically be legal, riding a horse on a highway is just dumb.

Having said that, everyone here is an a$$hole except the poor horse!

Why do you say that? It wasn't a restricted-access highway.

That's like saying, you shouldn't ride bicycles on the street, that's just dumb.

How do you think that the Amish get around, and get to Menard's?

Looks to me like it might be a restricted access highway no?

If it's actually a local road that's a different story.... I've seen horses on local roads many times.

I have family in the Kutztown PA area! ;)

This is the norm for agricultural areas. Roads can be used by tractors and probably the like in my local area's "agricultural" areas. Haven't seen horses though.

We have horses here pretty regularly. There's also a company who does horseback rides on the beach during the warmer months.

in my neighborhood at the crosswalks there is a button to cross the street at pedestrian height and another button that can be pushed from the saddle of a horse.

I'm sure there are crossings like that around here, complete with a little "green horse" symbol along with the "green man" to indicate when it's safe to cross (and this isn't even a rural area).

My gripe about it all is the double standard that says cyclists are constantly told off for 'scaring the horses', while motorists are the ones who regularly drive into horses and kill them, yet that just passes with almost no comment by the same people who moan about cyclists.

I don’t like/dislike horses but horsey people are some of the dumbest people to plague the earth.

I never had a problem, but that was a different era. We also had trails that avoided the road and tacit approval to ride through orchards and fields if we caused no harm.
