Anyone know of something you can soak smelly running shoes in that will destroy the odor completely, but not the shoes?

A few sprays of Febreze seems to help temporarily, but little more. Was hoping there was something that they could be soaked in...? Not sure if Febreze would actually be safe to actually soak or spray extreme amounts...

HAVE YOU TRIED OXICLEAN? ONE SCOOP IN EVERY LOAD OF LAUNDRY WILL MAKE YOUR WHITES WHITER AND YOUR BRIGHTS BRIGHTER.

Try soaking them in warm water and Oxyclean. After the water turns grey and nasty, rinse them out well and set them near a fan or vent to dry without getting moldy.

Get in the habit of using Odor Eaters powder or something too...

Edit: he beat me to it! Yeah it works, but don't use crazy hot water though, that can screw up adhesives and colors sometimes.

Not just for running shoes, but anyone who's had a pair of Vibram Fivefingers knows about "the funk". So, McNett came out with this just this year:

Rank Away

I ordered a bottle from eBay, hopefully it works as advertised. I have a pair that I use at the gym, and then a pair of the Smartwool Classics that are just for around the house. Both could use it.

Wash the insoles with the rest of your laundry. While they are running soak insides with serious disinfectant. Wipe clean with paper towel. Pepper generously with foot powder. Put insoles back in later.
OR, just replace the insoles with Odor Eaters insoles. But depending on the shoes in question you may not get the same cushioning.

IN THE FUTURE: Always douse with a healthy amount of foot powder before running.

Dr Sholes(sp?) has a powder you put in shoes, you can get it at Target or Walmart for sure. Put some in and put them out on the porch overnight. Depending on how funky they are, repeat with fresh powder and back on the porch. It might take 3 or 4 nights. The stuff's similar to baking soda but it works even better. I use it all the time, and after the funk is gone, toss a little in your shoes before you put them on. They also sell a foot spray that keeps my feet incredibly dry. I spray my feet fresh out of the shower and put a bit of the powder in my shoes every day now. I use to have some ranchy smelling feet/shoes. But those 2 products have all but eliminated the problems. I can go to the gym and cardio my ass off, and when I get home my feet are 99% dry and there's zero stench when I take my shoes off.
