Anyone recommend a decent news server?

I'm after a news server (paid-for I guess) that carries a large proportion of major groups with a decent retention rate- can anyone suggest one?

[Edit] I also need a decent news client - XNews is irritating me :)

Cheers!

Good call guys, they seem pretty good so far.
Also, NewsBin Pro seems like a decent newsreader, although I'm not entirely sure why it's taking soooo long to download the headers. 100Mb so far and it's only done 15,000

Why download headers when you can buy a 50 cents a week account on Newzbin and get .nzb's? Ultimate time saver

A few years back, in order to get what you wanted on newsgroups, you'd have to constantly download headers and skim through all of them to find what you want but the problem with that was that it'd take forever to go through all your favorite newsgroups and download new headers on each of them.

But then came newzbin.com where they keep a database of everything uploaded on newsgroups. That was all fine and dandy but you'd still need to download headers to find those files that newzbin says is online. So eventually the .nzb format was created that tells your newsgroup client exact where the files are. Just download the .nzb file coresponding to each file you want, open it in your client and the files you want will be added directly to your "To Download" list. No header download needed.

All you need to do is buy newsbin (it doesn't cost much) and then buy a premium account on newzbin.com (the site will probably explain the process better than I can)

Well, I signed up to newzbin, and also newshosting. I feel like anandtech keeps making me spend money. Instead of newsbin, I am using newsleecher, seems to be simpler.

No speed caps. When I was with Astraweb they capped me to 2mbps for unlimited, but at Newshosting I can max out my 5mb connection.

My max d/load speed is 1.5 Mbs,what pisses me off about Astraweb is the amount of missing files.

Also I use newsreactor and excellent binary sucker ;)

Has that been all the time or recently? Astraweb recently has been sucking for me. I've been getting a lot of fragmented files.

Been that way for a while just make sure you get all the PAR/PAR2 files to recombine missing files.

For me to download what I do in a month at Easynews it would cost me $100+.

As for a news client, I use Newsbin Pro. Grabit is also a solid program.

Easynews might be the best, but it's also the most expensive.

NZB files are the greatest thing since EasyNews. Make it VERY easy to grab just what you need. I cancelled my Usenetserver account a while ago because the service was getting very unreliable. I've been meaning to try Newshosting. I do like the model astraweb has where you can pre-pay for set download limit. Then you can use it whenever.

This is a comparison of the various providers:

Yeah I don't think it would work for me. I suck down about 20 gig/week

Newshosting is the best server value, by FAR. They have excellent retention (approx 30-35 days right now), completion, and speed (3Mbps). Newsleecher is the client to check out. Add-ons: account at Newzbin (pay) and dvdrs.net (free). Both are well worth checking out.
