I never saw anything like that on the oil/gas rigs I worked on in the Gulf during the '80's.

I never saw anything like that on the oil/gas rigs I worked on in the Gulf during the '80's.
if they are a part of a rig then they are most likely part of the deepwater wellhead or something else on the ocean floor and not above the water.

Really can't tell much from the pics what the equipment is. Not enough detail, nor enough scope of the work being performed.
There are so many specialty companies that do one or 2 things in the industry that have their own specialty equipment. Even though I've worked construction for over 30 years, I used to run into stuff that our sub-contractors used that I'd never seen before. Often, some new innovative technology that the company had invented themselves, or something that is made just for one small segment of the industry.
