I picked a Kenmore humidifier from Sears under $50. You'll need just to add water.

I'm looking for one too. I don't want the heated type, that'll run up the electric bill.
I had a holmes cool mist years ago and it sucked. It had a filter that needed to be replaced constantly.

Last week I picked up a hunter at walmart for $40 - it said it didn't need filter replacements and was supposed to be quiet. It was not quiet, and in fact it didn't put any humidity out at all. We left it running for about four hours and had marked the water line. The water level did not go down at all.

I'd like to get one that does not use filters and is quiet.

I got one from Home Depot (do not remember the brand right now). It has a small heating pad and it actually puts out steam instead of using a fan. It is fairly quiet, and it is very easy to maintain. You just have to fill the water tank when needed, and about once every month or two rinse it out and replace a small filter pad (its about the size of a drink coaster). You can set the desired humititly level and control the output rate. It was about $60 I think, and from what I can tell should last many years to come, as the only thing that gets scale build up is the replaceable pad.

Target has Vicks cool mist and warm mist humidifiers. I have a warm mist. It puts out A LOT of humidity. I don't know about the cool mist ones.
