one of my gal pals has been insisting that i read The Road" and recently gave me her copy of it to read. apparently, a few of her other friends (both genders) are reading it too. yes, the book is part of Oprah's book club and i normally don't read any of her endorsements.

so i've made it to page 10, and it's hell-a-depressing. if anyone here has read the book, does it get better? am i gonna wanna slash my wrists (j/k) after reading it? if most of the book is gonna be this dreary, i'd rather give up now.

Why trust anyone here for this? Go read some reviews. 13 year olds don't care about books.

why would i trust anyone on here? because i do. for the most part, i find the members here are intelligent and well-read. yeah i could go read the amazon reviews, but i'm taking the easy way out (like some of the posters here about all kinds of stuff) by asking ya'll.

I skimmed through it in Barnes & Noble, certainly not my type of book. Not that I object to reading about death, destruction & cannibalism, but this book was boring.

If you give up on it, skip to the last few pages. That put the seal on "yuck" for me, silliest ending ever. Just my opinion, of course.

I went home and watched Road Warrior again, much fun.

I just finished listening to the audiobook. The book is definitely depressing with a sad ending and slightly happy ending for the boy, but his writing style is really good. Another reason to read the book is that the author won the 2007 Pulitzer prize for fiction.

another one of his books "No Country For Old Men" is pretty good too. Totally different style. I had also read All the Pretty Horses in high school, but didn't care much for it.

I loved it.

And it's a damn shame about Oprah - what business does that hack have attaching her name to perfectly good literature?

And yes, it's very depressing, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Got me thinking... a lot of compelling images in that book that still stick with me today. It should only take you a couple of days - it's a quick read.

well, at least it gets a lot of people reading books they'd otherwise never read.

I read it. The style takes a little getting used to, but (for me at least) the story was captivating. I recommend it.
