I always saw them on the shelf but never really thought much of them.

I ended up picking up one of RA Salvatores Drizzt books and ended up liking it quite a bit, not I'm 20+ Forgotten Realms books in (mostly Salvatore) and they're great. I don't need a deep read, they're just good adventure stories and you care about the characters.

Anyone else like these books?

With so many different authors you can't make a blanket judgment on the series as a whole. Some I like, some I don't. Salvatore is one of the ones I don't like.

They're good because of the richness of the Forgotten Realms. It really doesn't matter how bad the author is, the books are still a good way to pass time on a beach or something.

Read them like crazy in Junior High, but have not touched them in years. Did you read the Icewind Dale books? I remember loving those. They are the pre-cursor to the Dark Elf books.

Have you tried any of the Dragonlance books? Weiss and Hickman did some great stuff there, as did R.A. Salvatore who did the Dark Elf stuff. Definitely worth checking out; I read pretty much every single Dragonlance novel way back when and stuff like the Dragons and Heroes series were just awesome.

Yeah I read Dragonlance like 20 years ago!

I got Raymond E. Feists newest book but havent picked it up yet, Feist has really gone downhill in my opinion. He peaked with Rise of a Merchant Prince.

Also used to read David Eddings.

My two favorite fantasy authors right now are Salvatore and Terry Brooks. Looking forward to some new Brooks stuff.

George R.R. Martin wrote some great books, but they're too far apart, and frankly I can't remember most of what happened in the prior ones by the time the new one comes out and can't fathom going back and re-reading them.

I alternate back and forth between fantasy and sci-fi. Might be coming to the end of a fantasy period and get back into sci-fi. Still have a lot of Asimov and Heinlein to read, and gotta read Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi too..

I read them back when I was a kid, but I haven't even touched one in at least 12 or so years.

Read quite a few Ed Greenwood novels but havent read much of any others. Seems that my local book store only carries Salvatore.

A few, loved them all. Was hard for Baldur's Gate at the time, and having books based on an awesome game was the shit.

I started them because all my friends were into them in college, but I thought Drizzt was too much of a munchkin and Elminster is like the prototype mary sue, so I could never get into them.

all the D&D novels are kinda weak, imo, because TSR (and later WotC) tried way too hard squeezing out as much money as they could without regard to quality.
