I have a MSI k9ngm2 (ms-7252) with AM2 socket and a nvidia c51G chipset and am about to update my XP install with win7 on an ssd. It does have SATA2 but I don't see ahci support.

Anyone with experience let me know how it worked or what to look out for.

If you want an SSD, buy a model looking into the future and just put up with the slight performance hit.

You will loose less than you think, and turning AHCI on or off you should not feel this without using benchmarks.

If you don't find an SATA>AHCI mode then you can also simply set it to SATA>RAID mode since it has the same NCQ enhance performance feature as AHCI does.

When I installed XP (2006 I think) I used the MS ide drivers because the RAID or Nvidia drivers had a shakey reputation in Anandtech discussions, but MS drivers performed well.

I ordered an Intel 530 240GB so it will be useful on something even if this doesn't work out well.

I was worried that newest ssds had comments that they don't work well on even the AMD chipsets, so what chance did Nvidia have? I got the Intel 530 and Win7 32 bit (IDE mode) is installed and working with no special effort. An old scanner and Print shop Deluxe are the only things that didn't survive the change so far.

I spent about 8 hours trying 64 bit from CD, USB and hard drive and kept getting "driver needed". There was never anything written to the ssd.

In summary, an Intel 530 SSD works on the K9ngm2 (C51PV with 430) with 32 bit Win7. Disk access is noticeably better, but no ahci. My efforts with 64 bit Win7 failed even with MSI and Nvidia "64 bit" drivers.

Now I'm caught up to 2009!!
