Anyone playing Endless Legend

4x fantasy turn based strategy game. Looks interesting and has a 81/100 score. Not sure if I want to jump in for $35 tho.

Just picked it up. Will report back later 🙂 Would be fun i the multiplayer is good.

Played it for a bit, very high production values imho, especially with the user interface. Didn't play enough to determine the biggest complaint: enemy ai

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about this now that it's been out for a while. I really don't like the UI and the game just feels unsatisfying. It is beautiful with excellent music though.

It sucks that I had a battle, my settler with two guards vs two barbarians and the barbarians just killed my settler while taking no damage and doing nothing to the escorts. What's the point in having escorts?

The AI is definitely the weakest point of the game, but I'm certainly enjoying it.

Having escorts doesn't make the settler immune to damage. 🙂

ya i was a bit concerned and skipped this for now...not all that inclined after reading this thread so far. I did buy Age of Wonders 3 though and am having a blast. Very in depth combat, counters, skills, spells, ranks you name it.

TallBill's comments are conspicuously absent..

I bought this in a sale. Gave it a try and it's not too bad. The AI feels pretty weak since they'll leave you alone for the most part, and when they do declare war on you, usually you can stomp them with your one army. I'm guessing for multiplayer that doesn't apply, but I'm thinking the game might be too slow for multiplayer.
It's an ok game. If they improve the AI it might be better, or if you are not good at playing 4x games then it could be fun since you'll be going at your own pace without much interference.

Comments here are much more negative than on Steam, but I haven't played it yet.

The biggest positive sounds like the art, though.

As a 4x and civ fan, I love Endless Legend. It does quite a few things that twist the familiar formulas and make for a pretty fun game.

you can customise your units with specific gear, chaning their stats and/or even adding new passive abilities. say, if you're fighting a melee-heavy enemy, give your archers crossbows, but if you're fighting some dragons, give them bows, and they'll have a juicy vs-flying bonus.

each of the factions play VERY differently. the differences are far beyond anything seen in a civ game, perhaps venice comes close, but here, every faction is venice, relative to each other!
one faction can't declare war, but they can move their cities, other can't declare peace, third can't have more than 1 city etc. these are the most visible differences, but playing each faction feels a bit like a new game due to wealth differences.

I really like this game.
there are only 2 considerable downsides.
1) AI. It's alright, somewhat good even for a strategy game, but it's still too easy to exploit it, and you end up increasing the difficulty, giving AI unfair advantages, that make any other but the military kind of victories near impossible.
2) combat :/
they tried to be unique, so the combat happens in phases, where you only specify starting positions and targets at the beginning of each phase, but as the phase plays out, battlefield can change in various ways, and the original target of a unit might die, for example, and then he does something based on a strategy preset that you chose.
it's an ok combat, but direct control of units at all times would have improved the game massively, and boost it into legitimate excellency territory (as every other aspect is pretty great).

Yeah I played it for about 10 hours....it's ok. The ability to design units is wonderful but I find there's way too much just "hit end turn 5 times to progress the game" going on, much more so than Civ. I also find the combat gets annoying.

Overall Civ is still the better game.

I found the same thing. It's certainly not a bad game, but it really is slow going. After 70-100 turns I felt I'd achieved the same as what I had in 30-50 turns in other games. And that was on "fast"! One reviewer said "It's like playing Civ at 1/4 speed". I liked Endless Space too, but one thing both Endless games suffer from is the slow pacing & repetition of AI combat can be slow and "samey" enough that after the first half dozen manual tactical combat rounds, you get the urge to hit "Auto Complete" all the time just to stop the game grinding to a halt (in terms of pacing). There's also no pop-up warning about units with unused turns, cities in revolt or a stalled production queue, etc, which drives up the level of micro-management if you have to click on absolutely everything every turn to avoid overlooking something. Some of the mechanics I liked (the effect of seasons on units, etc), but they really need to add an "extra fast" option and tweak the variation of the AI.

Grabbed this with my wife on Friday. I played 16 hours this weekend. This is my first true turn based 4X experience, with Sins of a Solar Empire being probably the next closest thing, and that isn't turn based.

Highly recommend this one. It has so much depth it's insane, but is also pretty approachable. The first few games I followed the quest system which did a pretty good job of introducing me to the game and it's mechanics. Between that and a bit of point and click and guess and interpret, it isn't too difficult to figure this one out. I did need a bit of googling but generally very approachable. Far more so than Beyond Earth, which I gave up on after just a few hours.

The battle system is different in this than Civ, but actually makes alot more sense to me. Int his game, troops travel around together as an Army, and fight in groups. When armies are near others that are in battle, they fight together. Battles take place in a quasi-mini-game, but not in a stupid mini game kind of way. They exist on a separate turn-based map in which there are six rounds of tactical moves and battle. The only downside of this is you don't have a ton of control over where your dudes move to once the battle begins. Im a fan of this version over Civ's style. But I do understand it isn't a perfect system.

The city growth is also different, as are the way workers/population are managed. In EL, your cities get the points for each of Industry (production), science, influence, dust (gold), and food for the immediate surriounding area as soon as you found the city. From there, as population increases you expand your city outward one tile at a time. You can allocate your population to focus on one specific thing or a mix of many things, with great controls.

For a newb, highly recommend. I assume for seasoned 4X-ers, it is also great but I'm not that so I don't know.

I have the game but only did the tutorial. The game look good and have some great elements in it. I played a lot of Fallen Enchantress/Legendary Heroes and I loved it, EL look similar.

I also want to try Age of Wonder 3 which, after reading some comments, is better in many ways.

But EL is a pretty cool game in this genre.

Just to check, do you know you can direct where your troops go in the tactical map? It's mentioned somewhere in the tutorial but easy to miss. I think you can give two orders to a unit, a move and an attack, so you can tell a unit to move to a certain hex and attack a certain unit, specially useful for ranged units and units that attack better from forest, or if a unit attacks AoE in a beam so you want to position them where they can hit several enemies.

Age of Wonders 3 focuses more on tactics, less on empire building. Combat is far superior to EL but the empire building is far less involved. Hero systems are fairly equal but AoW3 again has an edge here (mounts, spells, and item crafting). AoW3 does not have any quests, so advantage there to EL. AoW3 is far easier to break late game. A Level 20+ Sorcerer built for ranged damage just roflstomps everything. Heroes in EL definitely get stronger but not so overwhelmingly so as regular units get stronger as well.

Personally, the better empire building aspect of EL and the less broken end game (Mostly. I'm looking at you Broken Lords) makes me pickup EL instead of AoW3 when I'm looking for my strategy fix.

The problem is if that target moves out of range of your unit (which happens quite frequently) your unit then does whatever it wants (based on your combat profile) rather than letting you choose a new order. That combined with the AI's frequently idiotic pathing, can make combat rather frustrating at times. For example it will move ranged units to melee range to take advantage of a slight forest bonus rather than keeping them behind their protective wall of melee units. Full control is sorely needed.

That said, I still enjoy playing the game immensely. We've done quite a few LAN games at my house.

The pathing generally is pretty terrible, especially late in the game when it is winter all the time for some reason.

Do any of the expansions/DLC make the AI better?

Steam reviews and Metacritic make it sound like the best TBS ever, you guys killed it 🙂

Not sure if I should buy. Don't they make demos anymore?!?!? 🙁

I played a bit of it, and I really wanted to like it because I find the graphic design to be great........but....in the end it got boring over the long term for me. That said, I still recommend buying it if the price is good. I think AoW3 is the better game.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was actually looking at 'best TBS' games on the net and AoW3 was one of them, but Endless Legend looked pretty amazing so I was looking into that one. The price is around $35 and I don't think that included any expansions.
