Anyone played Chrono Cross on their PS3?

Just curious. I absolutely LOVED Chrono Trigger but never got to play the sequel Chrono Cross and I'm thinking of picking it up for my PS3. I have one of the original gen 60GB PS3s with the emotion engine chip. Taking a look at Sony's official compatibility list shows this:

"
Description: When the Chrono Cross Title screen appears, 3 horizontal bars of corruption intermittently flash on the left half of the screen for approximately 1/2 a second.
"

"
Description: Throughout gameplay, when the user's character encounters a battle, the text/menu boxes intermittently flicker from transparent to black.
"

But on another site a reviewer claims to have had no problems:

That's your PS3 telling you to stop playing the game because it's a bad game. It's doing you a favor. It has thoughts

But seriously, Chrono Cross was not a good game.

Oops, nevermind, apparently all models of the PS3 use PS1 software emulation, so any issues with PS1 titles should be apparent across the entire platform, until it gets fixed with a firmware update.

Really? Are you sure? Not saying you are wrong cause I've never played the game, I absolutely loved Chrono Trigger. Maybe you just don't like the genre? Didn't like the original Chrono Trigger? Cause reviewer reception seems almost universally positive:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Cross#Reception

"Critics praised the game's complex plot, innovative battle system, varied characters, moving score, vibrant graphics, and success in breaking convention with its predecessor.[3][7][34][35] Electronic Gaming Monthly gave Chrono Cross a Gold Award, scoring it 10/10/9.5 in their three reviewer format.[36] GameSpot awarded the game a perfect 10, one of only six games in the 40,000 games listed on Gamespot to have been given the score, and its Console Game of the Year Award for 2000.[3] Famitsu rated the game 36 out of 40 from four reviewers.[25] As of July 2007, Rotten Tomatoes and Game Rankings rate Chrono Cross at 92 and 93 percent."

The negatives mentioned after are relatively minor. There are a few harsh reviews over at GameFAQs I see but again mostly very positive:

Despite having the emotion engine from the PS2 compatibility is still not 100%, though it's close and subsequent firmware updates have brought it even closer. FF XII from the PS2 plays like a dream on my PS3. But this is a PS One game which the PS2 had to emulate to some degree as well. So we are talking 2 generations of hardware removed here. The compatibility should be good but the older the game the more likely that bugs will crop up.

Edit: Ahh yes didn't see your latter reply.

If you loved Chrono Trigger, that just gives you that much more to be pissed off about Chrono Cross. In CC, they shit on like every CT character and a whole bunch of aspects of CT. Not to mention a whole bunch of other bullshit design decisions.

Professional reviewers, yeah. But that's no different than any other mainstream release. Money = good reviews. It's an undeniable correlation.

Dig a bit deeper and look up reviews of actual RPG fans, and especially fans of Chrono Trigger. Then you'll find a lot of examples of things to hate about the game.

Hmm too bad then :(

Damn I would buy a good sequel to CT in under a second if they made one!

CC wasn't a bad game if you look at it as a standalone game. I didn't like the battle mechanics (actually hated it) but overall it was a good RPG. But if you are a CT fan you will probably hate how it "continues" the plot.

I still have Chrono Trigger for my SNES. One of my all-time favs, I absolutetly love that game.

I bought Chrono Cross for the PSX as soon as it came out. At times, I thought it was even better than CT, but at other times it felt like a dissappointment. The battle system is phenomenal, although it's different from CT it might be even better. The music in CC is also stunningly good. Just the opening cinematic could get my blood pumping.

Just don't go into CC thinking it's an extension of CT. There's almost no similarities throughout most of the storyline, although in the end you'll be very pleasantly surprised at the overaching theme. As a teaser but without giving too much away, CC's storyline fills in the missing details of what happened to Schala in CT. But don't expect any juicy details about CT until you're VERY well into the game already. And by then it feels like too little too late.

My recommendation would be not to miss this game. It's awesome, and although not up there with CT, it's close. In some ways it's even better...

i remember liking it at the time, battle mechanics didn't bother me. story was ok, though i couldn't get quite into it as much as i did with CT. i felt like having so many characters took focus away from building up emotional connection with just a core set of characters.

are you fucking kidding me?
CC was made on a smaller budget the the FFs of the time and was better than all of them. by far i would call it the greatest RPG ever made. even today its graphics look pretty good, its music sounds amazing and story and battle system are the best ever made.

OP you can emulate of the PC and it works very very well. i would suggest you go that route.

Yeah, that really is a convincing review.
