I'm hearing lots of good things about it, like it's the new Halo-like game except in third person.

I can only find 3 reviews so far...IGN only gave it a 8.1/10 but there's a lot of talk about that score now when you see all the people on gaming forums saying good things about it, plus the following two reviews

Xbox Addict - 5/5
GD XBox - 5/5

I got 35 bucks on my EB card burning a hole in my wallet, I might have to bite.

If they're saying it's the next Halo, then avoid it like the plague... that game blew. Halo 2 however will be great, because they're actually being given proper development time and not having to force it out for the launch of the Xbox. Hopefully they wont decide to repeat rooms in levels over and over, as well as going back through the same levels a second time. Halo had great potential, but it failed. The developers at Bungie even admitted it stunk and are surprised that everyone thinks it's the best game in the world.

IGN review claims that there's quite a bit of slowdown... that, is one thing I just cant stand in a console game. Maybe I'll rent it first.

Perhaps in comparison to Halo in terms of what they wanted to do, but I've never heard that Halo is considered a failure by anyone. In fact, I consider Halo the best game I've ever played, and wouldn't be surprised if many others do also. And as for proper development time, they actually had plenty of time considering how long ago the beginning from the idea on the Mac to the final XBOX version, IMO.

An 8.1 at IGN is worth about 1 pt less at Gamespot.

Which makes it a fairly good, but not great. Slowdown sucks :(

For me, Halo was not one of the best games I've ever played but it was a damn good game. Especially for a FPS on a console system.

Best game ever played? You've got to be joking. It's just another scripted FPS with purty graphics.

Here's one article on it

Though many who played the game would be shocked to believe it, Halo was rushed out the door. After Microsoft purchased Bungie, they changed Halo from a third-person squad game for PC and Mac to a first-person shooter (FPS) and made it one of the Xbox launch titles. With the difference in processing power and other hardware (most notably graphics card), a lot of the graphics had to be significantly upgraded. With such tight deadlines (Bungie was only purchased by Microsoft in June 2000 and the Xbox came out in November 2001), a lot of content had to be cut out in order to make the release date.

Apologies to Kami for going off thread topic.

Imho, Halo is one of the best games I've ever played. There are too many great games over the years to proclaim a "best"... But Halo is right up there.

Yes, it had tedious, repeating levels. But no game is without its faults.

Staying on topic for FPS games, as it's tough to gague different game types against each other:
Best Story based/Scripted FPS (like Halo) - Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (very close second, Half Life)

I agree that those are two very good games... But neither one hooked my like Halo did. And actually, I think that Half Life is one of the more overrated games in history. Don't get me wrong, I thought the game rocked, but the HL engine sucked and got in the way... But I digress.

I've been playing Brute Force for about an hour.

Let's get this out of the way, the gameplay is not as tight as Halo. The controls don't feel as smooth, and the melees are a little too haphazard. In Halo the combat was more organized and manageable. Whenver someone shot at you, it was pretty easy to locate them. Not so in Brute Force, where the characters and particle effects don't stand as much from the background. The graphics are uneven. In some places they're quite impressive, whereas in others they've clearly been rushed. That said, though, this is an awesome game. Definitely qualifies in my book as a Triple A title. This is the first "must have" game on X-Box since Splinter Cell.

I dunno, spliter cell is one fantastic game! To bad it doesn have Xbox Live support... I'm starting to regret the fact that I was in the beta and there are like 2 games worth playing on it...

Shantanu - thanks for the review. Fvck me, my pre-ordered copy is waiting for me, calling my name at Best Buy :| Should have had it delivered. *sigh* Guess I'll pick it up later after my night class.

Intake77 - there are people who hate it with a passion. (Apparently you, NFS4, couple others on here hate it too) It's a different style FPS than most FPS games. I've played them all, from Doom, Quake, Q2, 007 for the N64, Q3, Half Life, Castle Wolf, Medal of Honor, etc etc etc. None of them in my book compare to Halo. Halo is an imaginative and wonderful immersive experience. Bungie admitted it sucked? Pull up a link, I'd love to see that.

Halo was in fact rushed - no one has ever denied it. They cut out quite a bit (the extra levels, a lot of multiplayer content) and some of the bugs show, as seen on Bungie's official Halo site. (They actually like the fact people are finding bugs and new ways to do things that weren't supposed to be possible) But it's a damn fun game, especially multiplayer. What specific points do you not like about it?

Halo 2 is well on it's way to being one of the best FPS of all time (replacing the original imho, and all you Half Life2 people - your words fall on deaf ears) but it too is slightly rushed. Original release date of Nov. 03, they pushed it back to 04. Honestly though the wait will be well worth it. From the 10+ page spread in XBox Magazine they indicated/hinted that even with the extra time it'll be cutting it close. They even mentioned no one on the Halo team leaves the office before 10pm at night because of their dedication to the project. I'm sure the people that disliked Halo will love Halo2, and the people who loved Halo will love Halo2.

I think he was saying Splinter Cell is a AAA title too, but BF is the first must have title since then. XBox Mag says a Splinter Cell 1.5 is coming out soon with Live capability and an @$$load of multiplayer options.....in addition to a cell shaded Splinter Cell game (may not be the same character but along the same stealth-action type games)

kami - FVCK IGN. They gave WWF Raw like a 9.1 or something. There isn't a person or other game site/review/magazine that doesn't think that game blows @$$. I've stopped caring what IGN wrote a long time ago.

You're wayyy to angry, mr. marshmellow. ;)
When I first started playing Halo, I thought it was pretty cool... Thought it was fun for about three or four hours. Co-op play was a great addition to the game, as too many FPS's omit how darn fun it is playing through a game with a friend (wish they did a bit more with it.. like have Master Chief Beta or something) but hey, it was a good idea... In any event, Halo lost my love when I got to a level that was the same rooms, repeating over and over and over... from that point, the game pretty much repeated itself until i finished it. I dont hate it with a passion, although I do think it sucks because of mainly this reason, if i wanna play the same game twice or thrice, I'll start again on a harder difficulty when I'm done. I've got very little problem with multiplayer in halo, except the lack of real options and maps.

From what I understand Halo2 will be released next year, not this november, unless it changed from what I last heard. I have high hopes for it, as the vids from E3 made me very happy in the netherreigon... of course, HalfLife 2 will probably destroy it, but they'll both be great games.

EDIT: Almost forgot, I've played about every FPS as well.. well, a very good portion of them. We all have our opinions! I hate how UT2k4 looks like it's turning into Halo.

Intake - that wasn't a flame - sorry if you thought it was. If it was the words "dip$hit", "douche", and "dumb fvck" would all be used in a series of random combinations ;) The same rooms thing did get tedious but the addition of the flood livened it up a bit. In fact, just earlier this week I finally finished beating every level on every difficulty level. There were some boring parts, yes, but quite an enjoyable experience. I'm waiting for my DSL to get hooked up Monday to get on XBC and play it :) Half Life 2 will no doubt be innovative and fun, but a lot slower in terms of gameplay and action. Plus it'll take a top of the line computer just to play HL2 decently.

Having played this game some more, I think the gameplay issues can be traced back to the 3rd person view. 3rd person view works well for the Tomb Raiders and Marios, but has yet to prove itself in a shooter. Your character and the foreground near him take up a good chunk of the on screen space. That's information you don't need. And as a result of it, the more useful visual information (location of enemies, obstacles, etc.) is crammed into a smaller space. Also, as you're turning, the shooting doesn't immediatly keep up with the crosshair. I think the game would have worked much better as an FPS.
