I've played once. It was pretty fun and I'd like to do it again. I hit my friend in the head with the ball. It wasn't to hard of a shot though.

You don't have to spend that much money. I'm not sure what they cost now, I got a decent Ektelon racquet several years ago for about $40, you can probably still get one for that price. Then you just need some goggles and balls, and you can get those cheap. I don't know how you'd get away any cheaper than that.

<< I love playing indoor raquetball. I wish I had some place to play. >>

It's possible to play outdoors? Don't you need all 4 walls and the ceiling (and obviously, the floor)?

Finally.... a great subject :D

A played R-ball ever since i was in early grade school up through college, still play now, but not as much as I used to. (only 3 years out of school, FYI) Love the sport... nothing like an intense game. I played tournaments all the time when I lived in Ohio.

Best place to buy stuff was at the tournaments, but online, I would try Holabird . I remember ordering through their mail-order, but not online. Their prices were always the best.

what about the poor man's version? Paddleball is played on one wall, but I think it is a NY thing. You can also find it in FLA b/c of all the transplanted NYers. There are paddleball courts on South Beach. That is a great sport too!

I have a quick question about raquetball, are you allowed to hit the ceiling or is that counted as a "fault?" [whatever its called]
Relating to the topic you might want to look at fogdog.com or maybe check a sporting goods store like MVP or Sports Authority.

It can hit the ceiling unless it's on the serve. If it's on the serve, I believe it's considered out.

Not that I've ever found hitting the ceiling to be a worthwhile strategy. Keeping it low is what you want.

I play twice per week. Ceiling shots are not only valid, but advisable. A good ceiling shot will hit the ceiling first, front wall, then floor, and should be bouncing again near the back wall. If the second bounce is to far in front of the back wall, it's tee-off time for your opponent. It's a great recovery shot if you are in trouble, or just to move your opponent out of the centre of the court (where you want to be).

For equipment, you could try Racquetworld, I've heard they're good. But get a decent graphite racquet, preferably 22" long, as is the new standard. I like the Wilson line - something like the Ultra Classic would be a good starting point.

For more info, try alt.sport.racquetball (hope the link works). Though take the newsgroup with a grain of salt, they're mostly interested in slamming the USRA (governing body for racquetball in the US). From there, you should be able to get pointers on technique, local clubs, and tournaments. Doesn't help me, I'm in Canada.

It's a great sport! Only surpassed in my book by downhill skiing, which you should do as often as possible.

Regards,
Craig
