Anyone play online poker?

Hey thinking about doing this. Can someone recommend any good sites with nice sign on bonuses? Also...I was looking at pokerstars and they have all these conditions about earning points to get the bonuses. can someone explain to me how this works? thanks 🙂

I have a buddy that's really into this and plays full tilt fairly competitively.

He seems to play full tilt a lot, every now and then poker stars (although I believe that's only when he's hit some sort of limit in full tilt)

A friend on mine's wife plays online. You can play for free or pay. She doesn't get the "rush" playing for free so instead she's contributing to driving the family finances into the ground.

She could always just play the 1cent/2cent tables. Playing for money, so it weeds out most of the teens and trolls, but not much risk of losing your life savings.

I'd stick to the major sites (full tilt, pokerstars) because you have a better chance that it's "legit". I make decent money playing online, but I don't trust it enough to play for anything serious. It's simply too easy to cheat. I prefer playing live tournaments or cash games.

I played a decent deal on pokerstars and fulltiltpoker. I used to play partypoker before they pretty much closed their doors to the US.

Anyway, both PS and FTP have sign up bonuses and the way you get those bonuses is by playing. You earn points as you play raked hands (or join tournies, etc) and once you acquire enough points, they release part or all of your bonus amount.

Each site has different rules/point system. If you are playing only to try to get a free easy bonus, don't bother. It takes A LOT of playing to fully unlock bonuses and you should just be playing b/c you want to play and not just trying to get a quick $100 (arbitrary bonus amount).

hey can you elaborate a bit on the cheating? also i'm a recent college grad so i can't play big or get serious anyway but would it be wrong to think that this could be a fun way to play several hours a week to have an extra $100 or $200 a week for eating money?

Absolute Poker, $3 single table tourny, if you're a decent poker player you can win half the tables you play pretty easily. When you get use to playing online play 3-4 tables at the same time. And when you get better move up to $10 tables. Actually I'd start on the $3 tourny. I don't like the cash games much, but I love the single table tournaments. If cash games are more of your thing AP has some pretty good 5/10 cent tables, doesn't seem like much but after an hour win (or lose) it can add up.

I used to play online poker a while back right out of college to get some cash. If you play by the book (there are even computer programs you can run) you can usually come out ahead without much trouble but in the end you are not really making much money per hour doing it.

IDK, depends on the stakes and volume. I used to earn my living playing online poker. Rent, utilities, food, gas, car payment, everything was all payed for by playing sit and go tournaments (fuck cash games, seriously, FUCK cash games). I used to Multi table, play anywhere from 10 to 25 games at a time. You use a simple program to manage the tables in play, something that brings the table that needs an action to the top so can you can make your move. Read up on ICM (independent chip model).

Just stress the bubble and leave the rest of the people to play "real poker" lol.

This. Their forums are quite vast and comprehensive.

With PokerStars their initial sign up bonus works like this. They will give you $1 in bonus money for each $1 you deposit up to $600. Now for that amount to clear you have to earn certain amount of bonus points; I believe you have to earn 175 VPP points to clear each $10 of the bonus.

VPP points are earned by how much rake is paid at the table you play at. For instance, at the NL10 FR tables (that is .05/.10 blinds, No Limit Hold'em, 9 players max) for every $1 in rake paid by the table 8 VPPs is given to the table split amongst everyone who was dealt in the hand.

Most of the other sites work in a similar fashion; you clear the bonus money by how much "rake" you paid.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any questions via PM if you don't find the answers here or at 2p2.

you need to play very tight (Read: Boring) poker if you want to grind away at online sites.

I never believed that the big sites are able to get around player collusion at the tables.

Depends very much on the stakes of the game, and the level of play varies wildly. Most good (successful) players tend to not be "very tight" at all, they are more aggressive then most.

Player collusion is very hard to detect or prevent. For example, what's to players from sitting together (each with a laptop, tethered to a phone so the IP address is not the same). Not worth it for small amounts, but I know guys that did it for some of the games of more 'real' money.

You're not going to earn a very good hourly rate until you get pretty good. Initially you will lose money or (if you're lucky) make a little bit, but not enough to make it interesting unless you really love the game.

I prefer real games @ casinos, tournaments and the like.

So do I. I've been playing for eight or nine years, and online poker just doesn't do it for me.

i suck at poker. and i suck at remembering anything i read in poker books. (ie: read theory of poker. dont remember any of it.)

link to poker computer programs to help me?

In the old days you just had to post here and ask who wanted to play poker. We would then go to an online site and get a table. I dont remember where it was but Ill bet someone else here does.

a few years ago I used to make a couple hundred a week playing poker, don't have the bankroll to start playing again, but I'd love to
