I got an offer in my inbox this week for the entire game for $10 + 1 free month, so I figured what the hell and put down ten bucks for the game... I remember enjoying a 10-day trial back in the day and I could use a distraction from WoW for a bit.

anyone have any suggestions on the best class to just solo and experience the game with?

I like the game, though I haven't played it much since the new expansion came out. Have a level 62 guardian. He is decent for solo because he is hard to kill but he takes forever to kill stuff so the game will be longer.

I think Captain is a good one. Everyone likes them for groups and they have a good mix of utility and damage.

I have a lifetime sub, but I have not played in a while now. I do have fun with it, up until about level 30, but then I always get bored and start a new character. I've lost track of the number of times I have done that. :D

Not playing right now, but leveled a captain up to 60 in Moria.

If you are not into PvP, and/or like the books, go for it. Great graphics, good storyline with a bunch of places/people that were in the books.

All classes can solo (where have I heard that before? :D ), I liked my captain, not the fastest, but you get a pet. IF you want to just kill stuff quickly, either go champion for up-close melee, or rune-keeper for ranged magic (or hunter for bow/arrow).

Here is a page showing the classes and how they fit: Link

how do you think a minstrel would fare as my first class?

trying to find something that's both simple to play solo and useful in groups should I find myself grouping at some point.

Mini's once they get their warspeech skill (lvl 20?) does amazing amount of burst damage. They got a small nerf recently but they are very viable as solo, and in groups they are always welcome.
I would say pick a hunter for your 1st character and just make sure to get the best bow for your level. As a Hunter you can kill most things before they get near you. In a group as long as you watch your aggro you will be fine.

I played up till the Moria expansion, had a level 50 Burgler. I found that it is pretty easy to solo with a Burg, especially since you can be invisible and sneak into most places without a fight. Even if you get into a poor situation, you have a skill that automatically makes you invisible and undetectable for a couple seconds.

I had Minstrel a up to 16 and was loving it at first but then I slowly stopped liking it. So I started again with a Captain and liked it better. Got the captain up to 28 until WoW hooked me back in.

I think the crafting system is great.

how do captains' pets work in actual play?

reading the descriptions of them made them seem basically like totems with human graphics that follow you around.

Joined in December 2008, played until March 2009 with a Dwarven Champion hitting level 60.

Ended up enjoying it a load with a good kinship (clan). Did all of the Moria end game content except The Watcher. Had at the time, one of the best Legendary Weapons on my server (a 2nd Age Mace with Fervour, AoE Dmg and some other extremely nice high tier trait bonuses back when the only 1st Age Champion weapon was a Dagger :))

A tank, a single target DPSer and an AoE'er.

The Champion is capable of being an extremely powerful class even when not particularly specialising. Can be effective at pulling hate off other team mates (Minstrels especially) and the only reliable monster skill interrupter.

As a Champion, I was able to take on 4 Level 60-61 Orcs in Lothlorien and come out walking without using my long cooldown abilities. I could also take down 1 single Orc as fast as a Hunter though their single target damage is higher Vs. the bigger single targets.

As a tank, my Champion had several experiences as a tank (with Heavy Shield and Glory) in Skumfil left and right side. It was pretty fun and with good use of skills the mobs just stick to you. Your health is high enough to take hard hits from every mob I ever encountered and you always have abilities to make things a little easier on you.

Short and sweet...

Solo - Champion is easy to pick up, get used to and have some simple massacring. Can be a bit bland as all you really do is hit people all day.

Group - A great Champion is quite possibly the best character in the game. I always had immense fun in turning a good party into a great party or making sure a bad party wasn't so bad it sucked. Many of my deaths were caused by selflessly pulling hate off a Minstrel in a terribad group, allowing the Minstrel to get off critical heals and save the group from collapsing.

A bad Champion is okay but not desirable. They can't clobber reliably, they do poor damage and have little concept of the game. These players are probably terrible at other classes too.

All of my info is based upon my last real gameplay which was March 2009. I know Champion's have had a few nerfs along the way from then but I believe they were rather minor.

Eitherway, you cannot go far wrong with playing LoTRO.

from my POV, it seemed worth it even if I only play for a month for $10... I've paid that much for DLC that I plowed through in an afternoon.

I played it for a while. Got up to 40 on a couple of characters then quit. One of my characters was a guardian and I got up to 35 solo without dying.

The game is becoming more solo / "casual" friendly. With the recent update, the main story line is fully soloable.
slightly off-topic, the game has some of the most beautiful environments I have seen in a game, especially the shire and rivendell.

I get my money's worth out of it. I have a few 65's, but I pretty much just play my captain. A captain can either use a banner, or a pet. The pet is relatively worthless at end game, in my opinion. It is great for leveling up during the quests though. Send your pet in to agro peeps, then run it and grab quest reward.

Captain + Guardian = Awesome combo. My brother plays his 65 Guardian with me and we tear some stuff up.

I find the game one of the best MMOs I have ever played, but that is mainly because I love the lore.

anyone know if there's a way to resize or move tooptip displays?

it's super annoying that there's a giant box in the middle of my screen every time my house hovers over an ability.

I really enjoyed it... for a while. I played right up to the games expansion and quit right before its launch. The run up to level 60 was vvvery fun, but short. In about a 2 months, I did EVERY quest in the game, (including the extremely hard instance quests).

The only thing left at that point was to repeat a half dozen or so "instance" quests again and again and again.. in hopes that I "might" be the person to get the random award at the end. It sometimes took days to get a 12 man raid together... and even then you still had to "roll" the dice and hope that you'll be the one with the highest number. Hell, it took me a week to get a Balrog raid going..

I hated the constant repetition at this point, and so I quit. I didn't even bother trying to do those instance quests 100x to get the best "anti-radiance" armor in the game. I guess there was better armor but you needed a large portion of this "anti-radiance" armor in order to even attempt at the "Lady of the lake" armor (or whatever it was called lol).

You'd have to look up the key for it, but you can display all the UI anchors on your screen. Not 100% sure you can (at least easily) resize them, but you can move them.

I have been playing now for about a week of and all but it seems to be more solo type game, not sure when it becomes were you need groups a lot to do somthing.
To me this take's away from the game I play online game to group with others when I have the time to and then solo when I don't.

Part of it is that the game has been out so long that the population is all at the higher levels. So they made the beginning easier so people could level Alts. There really isn't a lot new players coming in.

The higher you go the more people you will see and the more groups you will get.

They actually revamped most of the newb areas, and made the Vol 1 main storyline quest solable.

LOTRO is very casual / solo-friendly all the way through. There are a few raids at endgame and some 3/6 man instances but it's definitely designed to be playable by yourself. Mirkwood (latest expansion, 61-65) is 95% solo quests with a couple of very optional fellowship quests at the very end.

I recommend the Lore-master as a solo class. It's somewhat difficult like the warden but scales really well. The minstrel is of course a great class if you want to be in demand for groups, but with the latest batch of nerfs it isn't as fun to play as it used to be.
