Not exactly thick, but not Galaxy Tab thin either. But, it does have more ports and capabilities than the Samsung's.

299.99 USD

I am very happy with my Galaxy Tab,the 8 inch form factor is appealing but not enough to shell out a few hundred dollars for it.

The price is certainly right, but I'd really want to try it before buying one. Archos isn't exactly known for having high quality products. Part of me wonders where they've cut corners and what impact that will invariably have.

The screen seems to be the #1 cost cutting measure in all the 'cheap' tablets. Seems like the primary method the user has of interacting with the device should be decent.

I think the market mostly agrees with that sentiment, as tablets with nicer screens like the Galaxy Tab and the Transformer are more successful, while tablets with non-IPS screens like the Xoom or Acer Iconia have been less successful. Hopefully companies will learn from that.

I still want a Super AMOLED+ tablet.

yeah that is right with these android tabs. whether they work properly/as intended is more of an issue than the specs

No thanks. I have had two Archos tablets and they were both garbage. Was smart enough to get the 2nd one from Amazon so I could return it.
Theres a reason they are much cheaper than everyone else.

I think I will wait for the samsung 7 inch amoled+ tablet. Hopefully it'll be out by nov and will be great for reading books among other things.

I want one too. Only thing that bothers me is that I think it will cost well above $500. For an 8" device, that's a bit steep - even with the amoled screen.

I figured I would take the plunge, I just ordered the Archos G9 80. I will write a summary of what I think about it (don't expect anything professional, I suck at writing... thank you Florida school system). I will base my impressions on my prior experience with my previously owned tablets; a Viewsonic GTablet, Barnes and Noble Nook Color, and Asus Transformer.

I am most excited about the 8" 4:3 form factor. If there is anything that you would like me to test ie benchmarks/compatibility/general performance/build quality, leave a comment here or PM me and I will try to get some results to you.

Wow. You are a value tablet connoisseur. Only missing one from this year!

1. How is the screen compared to the other tablets- better than Gtab? Almost as good as Nook Color and Transformer? Viewing angles, brightness, crispness, etc.

2. Please let us know the Quadrant scores and Linpack scores.

3. Tell us how well flash (especially 720p flash) works.

Hehe, yeah I have yet to find the perfect tablet. I ordered it this morning with overnight shipping so I am hoping it gets here Monday and no later than Tuesday. I wanted to wait until the G9 80 Turbo is released next month but I am sure, if it is a decent tablet, someone will root it and I will have an OC kernel soon enough.

Sorry for the late update, school has been kicking my ass lately. The benchmarks don't really do this thing justice (especially Quadrant). My Gtablet would run about 2500 on Quadrant and this feels much faster and smoother.

Benchmarks:

Linpack Single Thread (3.2.46) - 38.193
Linpack Multi Thread (3.2.46) - 61.222
Quadrant (3.2.46) - 1568

Screen
Screen quality is pretty darn good. I am not going to go as far as saying it is as good as or better than the Transformer, but it is much better than the Viewsonic Gtablet (which may not be saying much). There is really no discoloration or viewing angle issues with this screen. I will post pictures next a Nook Color for comparison. I have no complaints about the quality of the screen, very crisp and has very good viewing angles.

Flash Testing:
Tested using the stock browser and the newest Flash 11 update:
Youtube Tron Trailer @ 720p - Smooth, no stuttering.
Youtube Tron Trailer @ 1080p - Smooth, no stuttering.

During my testing of random 720p/1080p videos on the internet I found very inconsistent playback. Some would play smoother than other, while some would barely play at all.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

All in all I am VERY happy with this tablet, it is definitely a keeper. I would hold off on buying one until they release the Turbo editions.

Some things I noticed about the tablet:
  • Button placement/port placement is pretty inconvenient. While holding the tablet in landscape mode, the volume rocker sits underneath your right hand and the charging port and headphone jack sit under your left hand. You WILL press the volume rocker involuntarily while in landscape mode.
  • The charger area gets pretty hot while charging.
  • My screen does get a screen dimple(?) near the upper left side when I press the housing/screen. Very minimal, just weird.
  • I have found the 8" 4:3 form factor VERY useful for reading books. I felt the Nook Color was too narrow for reading PDFs and the Transformer too big to hold comfortably in portrait. 8" 4:3 seems like my sweet spot.
  • There is no stuttering at all while using the tablet. It feels as responsive as the Transformer.

When the model with the 500GB HDD comes out...

I just want to have all my content on the go. Then I would only have to worry about tethering to my Evo when I'm bored someplace and want the Internet on a larger screen.

But that form factor is perfect.

I have one in hand, do you know I can check this?

I'm not quite sure how to check other than maybe checking your location when not in Wifi or cell tower range (I'm clueless as to whether aGPS would even work within cell tower range without a data plan). That would be too much of a hassle, but according to the FAQ it appears as though it may not be assisted:

The GPS in my device is taking time to localize me, what can I do? The GPS in G9 tablets can be assisted by the 3G Stick for faster localization. So if you have the 3G Stick, turn it on to get localized faster. Other than that, the GPS module works by satellite, so localization happens faster when you are outside in an open area.

I turned on the GPS and turned off WIFI to see if I could get a lock but didn't have any luck. It is pouring outside so I didn't have a chance to check it outside, this was all tested inside.
