anyone own these or checked them out, are they sturdy?

I have a Sauder entertainment center that has a glass curio area on top. Its all pressed wood, but it looks very nice. Its sturdy enough, and the matching bookcases on the sides are packed full of books with no sagging or anything in the shelves.

I actually like light colored walls and ceilings with dark colored floor tile. The only acception would be a light colored hardwood floor, as long as the room is adorned with furnature made of oak and cherry wood. I have very specific tastes. 😛

When I have my house built, I'm going to have a "library" with a dark color scheme. I want black floor tiles, gray grout, eggshell wall and ceiling paint, dark wood accents and furnature, lit at night only by a fireplace.

Yes it would be sturdy enough, but you know it isn't quality, just has enough screws to hold up under your books. I bought some Sauder brand when I was just starting out and they're that kind that you put together yourself from the long thin box at Walmart. The usual plywood, gluelams, cheap veneer, temporary furniture. Quality furniture is one of the best investments you can make, but you won't find it in this price range.

yes exactly... i have hardwoord floors, and I chose canadian maple... and my walls are atrium white Benjamin Moore, and my furniture is going to be mahagonys, cherry, etc. What I don't like about oak is you see to much of its grain.
 
Sauder is the Rolls Royce of particleboard furniture. Their veneers are really nice and they use just enough real wood to make them pretty sturdy. At the end of the day, they are still particleboard.

I have a Sauder office set and an entertainment center. The desk is very hard to move as the top flexes and threatens to break if you lift the ends. The entertainment center has sagged a bit from the weight of my 27" flat screen tv (75+lbs). Despite their shortcomings, both pieces look great.

yeah i know.. solid wood with glass should be around $500
 
Sauder is pretty cheap stuff. I have a friend who used to be in the office furniture business and he would shudder and get chills if you mentioned Sauder.

I think you would be better off to wait and get some better quality stuff.
 
yeah, i know... i've had sauder and osullivan stuff... i mean it it can hold a real stack of books or a couple hundred spindles of cdrs here and there... and sag a little, I'm happy.... cuz the last what 6 - 15 years you couldn't get good stuff anymore without spending 4-600 bucks for some nicely crafted hardwood stuff...
 
Before you buy one of these for $130, check around your newspaper for any business bankruptcy auctions. I went to a auction earlier this year where a pair of these shelves went for $20.



 
nice find... good tip, but usually these auctions are during the weekday... when i'm working... and i know i'm not near any auction, nor do i drive... nor will i necessarily find these exact kinds of furniture at any given auction i go to... so i think the best i can do is wait for some kind of officedepot coupon... staples has them on their site too, and they offer more coupons, but when i put this into my cart, they say it's out of stock
