Anyone own an E-Machine Computer?

My friend wants to buy a new computer and is looking into buying the Emachine because its $389 after rebates and he wants to do the $100 upgrade to get it to a 2.0Ghz Celeron + DVD ROM + 40XCDRW drive. I offered to help him build a custom machine but his brother is insisting on having his brother buy this Emachine because its can be upgraded to a "Flat Screen Monitor" even though I told him its not an LCD Moniter and thats what he really wants, but his brother is saying its the LCD. Anyone here own the Emachine and how good it performs?

You can get both a cheaper and far better machine at Dell right now, and without rebates. Plus you can have it configured however you want, and delivered free.

I spoke to him about buying a dell but he insists on buying a PC in store so he can take it home that day.

and a flat screen monitor is a CRT, similar to Dell's Trinitron Line.

tell him he's looking for a Flat Panel Monitor.

then tell him to learn how to build. i've got mine almost configured...

You know what, I don't care, and I don't really see why you should, either. If your friend's brother wants to buy a POS PC, why should you care? And if you shouldn't care, I definitely shouldn't care....

Agreed, Staples has one for like $400 or something right now after rebates.

Could it be that HiTek21 will be the one his friend comes to when the POS PC breaks down?

He could be steering his friend in another direction to save himself the hassle of having to deal with it later. 😉

You're better off not trying to help him then. He's going to buy whatever he wants regardless of your advice. He just wants someone there to blame in case he later feels he made a bad choice, and that someone is going to be you, no matter what your advice was.

friends dont' let friends buy Celerons', esp. for $389 (geez it sounds funny saying this, $389 is really not a whole lot, but these days it is).

I've heard bad things about E-Machines. Look, one BIG problem people make when they buy packard bells, emachines, compaqs, and other POS computers is they forget to look into the quality of the components. Many of these cheaper brands use integrated audio, video, modems, and lan. Unless its a ECS K7S5A or the like (which its not), you get crappy audio, video, and modem. The CMI audio chipset is supposed to be okay, i believe they even have 4.1 surround, but i doubt most of these cheap systems that use the integrated sh*t use that chipset. probably AC '97. the other thing one must consider is the quality of the cd-rom drive. from my experience there is a big difference in the ability for cd-roms to read data. a 30 dollar SONY is a lot better than what they probably use. hard drives are not proprietary, and any major brand is decent, so i won't comment on that. now, what about power supply? what kind of upgrades can the guy expect on a probably 200W power supply?

The case is probably going to be super hard to work in, and the design for air circulation sucks. Tell him to be a patient little booger and get the DELL, or you build him one today and make some cash.

I offered to build him a PC and he always tells me sound great and before you know it he tells me he doesn't have the money or he wants to go buy one from the store.

I told him to go for something like this setup.

Asus NForce Board deluxe w/ XP 1700+ Tbred B for 130
Radeon 7500 for $60
Enermax Case w/ 330w PSU for $60
Kingston 256mb DDR PC2100 for $38
Western Digital 60gb 7200 RPM for $59 (After MIR)
Maybe a nice viewsonic 17" flat screen crt moniter for $120
probably can get a Liteon CDRW for $20 somewhere

I've had two. One died less than a year after I got it, and the other less than a day after I got it. I will never get another one.

I know people like that. My brother in law is one. I've been building computers for almost 10 years now, but doesn't want me to build one for him.

.

I ended up negoatiating a killer deal on a dell for him. In any case, he has a good computer but paid about 1.25 time as much as he needed to, but its a dell, and dells do use good stuff, so i won't bicker.

If he is like this, and he needs the computer TODAY, then let him buy that POS. let him suffer. you've done your duty as a friend, and if he still insists otherwise, it isn't in your hands. Let it go, i know its hard, but let it go...
