Anyone own a PDA/GPS Handheld device?

Anyone own a PDA/GPS Handheld device? If so what are the pros and cons and which brand model would you recommend. Also is there any coming out soon with built in wifi?

Thank you

The iPaq hw6515 and upcoming hw6915 include GPS and wifi, if you want a phone too. I was going to get the 6915 when it comes out, but the crappy battery life and crappy screen resolution turned me off. I'm getting a TMobile MDA any day now, and may add a bluetooth GPS receiver in the future.

Honestly, I think a PocketPC with BT and a BT GPS receiver is your best bet.

that's what i have...i have a dell axim x50v with a navman 4410 BT GPS receiver. i have it in my car with an arkon vent mount. i don't use the GPS anywhere except inside my car, so it serves its function quite well

I have a Tm MDA compact.

I just bought a Rikaline 6033 BT GPS unit. Going to get a mount next for it.

Friend has the same setup with TomTom and works very well for his car.

The TomTom PDA bundle that they offer for PDAs is supposedly fantastic. I decided against it and went with the GO 300 portable because it could be seperated from my phone if I wanted to lend it to someone, the voice is clearer, and the screen seemed easier to deal with.

this is not a good pic, but you can kind of see the receiver. here it's mounted to my windshield, but you can just lay it on the dash if you'd like.

gps

it communicates with my axim through blue tooth, so no wires between them. i currently use mapopolis as my mapping software. i just give it an address, and tell it to navigate me. it will give me voice prompts turn by turn, as well as display instructions and route on the screen.

How do you have 2 devices plugged into one cigerette lighter socket?

Also are mapping software interchangable from different companies on the Axim.

Also does it tell you to turn in a certain number of feet or by street name?

Also does the Axim play wmv well?

Also around how much did you pay for your Axim?

Thank in advance.

Thank you

Got a Palm T3 with a bluetooth GPS. Processor too slow and screen too small. Maps take too much space. I have the SE US on 1 gig, but it takes all of it.

yea, the best thing about the x50v and x51v is the screen...the true VGA screen is gorgeous

i've heard some people having trouble with the bluetooth with wm5 on x51v though. you experiencing this?

actually, my accord has two lighter sockets, one in the dash, and one in the center console. but the bluetooth receiver can actually run on rechargeable batteries for like 8-12 hours. if you plug it into the lighter, it can recharge the batteries. that's another option...in general, the axim x50v doesn't have the battery life to last more than 5 hours on a single charge.

yes, mapping software is interchangeable...actually you can install as many different types of software you want on your axim. just try to get a gps receiver that is nmea 0183 compatible. htat way the hardware isn't specific to any software.

the software i use, mapopolis, will read you the feet from the intersection, and also when to turn. the street name shows on the PDA, but it doesn't enunciate, if that's what you're asking. i am sure there is gps software out there that will do this.

axim does play movies VERY well. the 640x480 vga screen is gorgeous. many people use it to watch movies.

well, i bought my girlfriend an x51v + rhinoskin case for about $270 shipped in november. my x50v + BT GPS + rhinoskin case was bought for $335 shipped from a guy on aximsite.com.

<--- Ipaq fanboi.

I've owned 3 from the current IPAQ line and 2 HP Jornada's before the merger. They all have their pros and cons, you should think about what you want to use it for then do research based on that rather than asking for generic pros and cons. I use a CF GPS receiver in my Ipaq 2215, it's voice prompted directions so I don't bother with keeping the PPC in view, I just listen for it to say something like "Right turn 200 feet"

I've got the Palm branded GPS car kit. It's a BT GPS w TomTom 5. It does work well.
