How is the subwoofer bass?

Mine seems like it's barely outputting any bass. I've messed around w/ all of the settings and can't figure it out. I have the knob behind it at the halfway point, and the rest of the receiver settings are default. It seems abnormally faint to me, and even when I put my ear near the subwoofer it's barely audible. I tried the speaker test and it barely makes any noise. Maybe defective?

If it needs to be fixed, do I just take it into an authorized repair place and they do it for free?

Does all the settings include the channel level adjust?

Does it sound normal if you turn up the gain on the sub more?

Try another RCA cable, the one provided with the system is pretty flimsy, I wouldn't doubt it could be damaged.

How big is your room?

We set one up in HomeBrewerDude's basement and it was working well enough.

What happens when you go through the test tones on the receiver? Does the sub volume still seem bad?

I forget if the crossover is adjustable on that system, what do you have it set on?

If you turn up the sub level like Sensai mentioned, does that change things, or is it still weak?

the room's a pretty big living room, but the bass was weak even when i put my ear next to it. going through the test tones i could barely hear when i got to the sub. is it supposed to be easily audible on the test?

the crossover is set to default 100, but i also tried 80 and 120.

i've turned up the sub level as well and there was some increase, but not significant. regardless, i would think the bass would be pretty decent even at default. i have logitech z-560 computer speakers, and the bass hits a lot harder than my onkyo - it's not even close. basically, i can barely feel the air moving out of that air hole.

i'm not stating this subjectively, as in "dang i want X amount of bass but am only getting this much," like its not adequate for my personal taste. even objectively the bass is almost nonexistent out of the sub.

I have a Onkyo HTIB... and I think for the sub to be loud, you need to turn on the 'extra bass' option... not sure what it is called... i will try to find it

Edit: My system is the HT-S777C and to get the extra bump i turn on the 'double bass' option from Audio Adjust menu. And yes, without that turned on u get almost no bass, like you described 'i can barely feel the air moving out of that air hole. '

Full as in full range? You don't want that. You want the speakers set to small. Bass will then be redirected to the sub.

If the test tones gets you almost no output, then there is something wrong for sure. Do you have anything you could troubleshoot with to make sure it's the sub itself and not the subwoofer output from the receiver?

ok, that's actually what i read on AVS - that i should set the front speakers to small. what crossover frequency should i be using?

i have a spare panasonic HTIB laying around, so if the connection's the same on the sub i'll try it out.

its more likely it would be the sub and not the subwoofer output, right?

yoyo, i'm sure you've heard this system first-hand. is the bass more than adequate? (in terms of output, not necessarily clarity/accuracy)

thanks again

100hz sounds about right for the crossover. The speakers probably start to roll off pretty bad around ~80hz, so 100hz is probably a good place to set it.

Some very cheap HTIB sets tend to have passive subs, but if the Panasonic is an active one, then switching it out should let you know right away what the problem is.

Yeah, I would say that it's more likely that something go wrong with the subwoofer than a problem with the output of the receiver if the receiver seems to be working in every other way.

You should be able to get good output from the 790 sub. Same ballpart as the Logitech 560 sub kind of output.

ok, well i wasn't able to swap out another subwoofer to test it out. i tried just leaving the subwoofer and center channel hooked up. the sub gets loud enough when i turn the volume up to the 40-50 range (out of 79), but anything lower and its barely audible. the problem is that the 40-50 range is way too loud for even watching movies.

Well if you're unable to compensate with level adjust and the gain knob, then there's something wrong and you should try to get it replaced.

Are there multiple subwoofer outputs on the receiver? Are there multiple inputs on the subwoofer?
