Anyone Own a Montblanc Fountain Pen?

Just wondering if anyone had one and what their opinions of them were? I really like the look but get mixed opinions of them from the "pen" message boards..wondering if there were any "real" people here that had one and could give an opinion instead of the fanatics at other sites who are "into" pens..I mainly like the looks, but if they are truly not that good then I will fuggedaboudit.

thanks

They aren't that good IMO. Just your regular old fountain pen that costs ~100$. I've also tried montblanc ball point pens, and you couldn't tell the difference between them and a BIC.

Ameesh I would but I always feel "pressured" when I am in the store, and really hate making impulse buys...which is why I usually do a little homework first on something I like...personally helps to reduce the pressure.

I have a Montblanc ballpoint. I use it all the time. They are quite a bit smoother writing than a Bic IMO, esp. when you get a new refill. Also you have the nice weight distribution and thickness that's better for writing IMO.

Mostly it's good for me because I used to go through pens at an insane rate -- both losing them and chewing on the end as a nervous habit. You can bet your ass I don't gnaw on my Montblanc, and I'm very very careful not to lose it too!

Wb I am the same way...I used to go through cheapo sunglasses like you wouldn't believe until one day my younger brother convinced me to look at something nicer, so I bought a pair of Oakleys and have had them for three years now...I am the same with pens, I feel bad going through like 50 bics in a week as it is a waste, whereas when I have a nicer pen I pay more attention to it....

I've got a couple of Montblanc fountain pens somewhere in my storage collecting dust. I don't really care for them in day to day use so they never get used. I'll probably give them away some day. I prefer the good old Faber Castell Uniball. 🙂

I have a Fountain Pen, Rollerball pen and lead pencil along with a leather carrying case.

The pen is quite nice but there are quite a few models available (thick, thin, different nibs and so on) so be sure to find the one that fits your hand and writing style the best.

Are they worth it? Sort of like a Rolex, a timex tells the time also but what image are you looking for? A good pen like a good watch will last a life time.

MBlanc makes a lot of different pens. I used to have one that costed about $20 and I didn't think it was a very good pen. But i'm sure that the $1000 ones aren't just nicer but they are better. I'd listen to the pen nerds on the other sites though.

Thanks Lebang for the insight..if it were computer or technology related stuff then I would definately listen to the nerds, but I have found that when talking about high end stuff that doesn't change much over the years in technology (watches, pens...etc) there is a whole lot of zealotry and such..where the "officionados" will not like something simply because it is a "big" brand name, even if it works wonderfully and is made well they will still gripe about something simply because everyone wants one and somehow that makes it less special..I was hoping that I might get opinions from people who just use the pens without being "into" pens so that I can discern if they are durable and what not..and wont have to deal with the baggage associated with asking those who religiously worship pens (sounds odd but there are people like this).

thanks

Your in luck, I am the perfect person to ask about this he he he. Ok I had a Montblanc 144 it was the slimmer fountain pen. I think Retail is something like $250 or so. When I had it I liked it alot, but finally retired it because it ended up leaking alot around the nib and it also cracked on the barrel. I then bought a Stipula Novecento fountain pen. I think the list on them is about $475. It is leaps and bounds above the Mont Blanc. It is made much better, and is alot more solid. There is no way this pen is going to crack unless you abuse it, its made of ebonite like bowling balls. It writes really great, much better than the Mont Blac. Now if you look online you can get much much better deals than in the stores. I suggest www.fountainpenhospital.com or www.worldpen.com they are both good places. My favorite pen companies are Stipula, Visconti and Montegrappa. I think you would be way better getting one of those then a mont blac. If you buy from a good online store you will get a good discount on a better pen, mont blancs are nearly impossible to get a discount on. Oh I nearly forgot www.pens.it is a great place also. Its in Italy but they have the lowest prices and I have heard many good things. Dont hesitate to pm me if you have anymore questions.

I gave up on Monteblanc. It spent more time in transit to/from the factory (or at the factory) than it did in use. In roughly the same class (depending on model), I like the Watermans alot. I've had one for years and it's still going strong.

Both had a pretty good feel (for me, I have large hands), but overall, I like the Waterman.

FWIW

I had a really nice pen once...lost it somewhere.

Now if I feel comfortable writing with it, a $3 pen is good enough.
