Find out where the foreclosed mobile homes are sold in your area, you may be able to pick up a very descent five year old double wide for $15 grand like a friend of mine did.

He calls it cheap living until he saves up enough to pay cash for a house.

I've only seen a few listed so far, they all range from 45k to 97k.

And you'd spend that kind of money instead of renting?

Renting a place is going to run me anywhere from 1200 to 1400 a month.

Renting a mobile home is $1200/month?????

I needed a place to live for about 3 months a few years ago and I rented a trailer for that timeframe (I HATE apartments). It was a brand-new single-wide (2BR/1BA) on 1+ acre, it cost me $125/week. No, it's not the greatest living in the world but I'd do it again under the same circumstances.

And it beats the snot out of being 4 inches away from your neighbors.

Why not just sell your current house and buy one closer to work?

Houses in the area of work go for 400k and up, and I like the place I have now. I put in a home theater, it's close to my friends, in walking distance to things I like to do, and I'd love to be able to use it on the weekends.

I don't see any mobile homes to rent in the area, $1200/month is for a one bedroom apartment, which I'd like to avoid.

Be sure to check into the land lease it sits on. Some trailer homes have a land rental fee that is as much, if not more than the cost of the trailer loan.

Yeah, update with the land situation!

Nice generalization.
While I make trailer trash jokes and for the most part view trailer parks as lower class, I've also seen a few, my grandfather lived in them, that were very nice and well kept communities.
If you want to live outside the city life, you really have no choice unless you are stinking rich.

I had a friend that did this for like 9 months. He slept in the parking lot across the street from his job.

My wife's in a 2 year physician assistant program. They said about 3 years ago they had a guy that was so broke after tuition, books, etc....that he pitched a tent across the street from the building the classes were in and ate at the soup kitchen.
