Quarter-life crisis oncoming here..at 26, and am wanting either a fun new second car, or a boat. I live in San Diego and have ridden a motor boat before and have gone sailing, and had the times of my lives.

Going through Craigslist a nice sailboat goes for around $10k or so..so any pro/cons to owning a boat?

the biggest downsides to owning a boat:

1. you have to keep it somewhere. This can either be a hassle (your front lawn) or get very very expensive (slip fees) depending on the size of the boat. Also - getting a slip or moorage in San Diego can be a multi-year waitlist problem.
2. Maintenance. Boats in salt water cost 3-4x as much as fresh water boats to maintain. salt eats everything. If your boat is trailered plan on spending 30 minutes getting the salt out of and off of everything after every time you use it. If it's in the water plan on spending several thousand getting it hauled out every few years for a bottom job.
3. If you arn't mechanically able right now you will be after a few years of owning a boat... or you'll be broke. Retail for things like marine O-rings: $5 Wholesale: 50 for $1.

I own two boats and I love it. However, my boat slips are my dock in my back yard, and it's fresh water. I was going to say what LOFBenson said, this man speaks the truth.

Get the car.

Don't spend money on a toy until you have at least a $25-50k emergency fund, 20 percent plus equity in your house, and no debt aside from a mortgage and car.

A boat is a hole in the water into which you constantly pour large sums of money...

I've owned a couple of boats over the years. They're fun...but can get very expensive to own and maintain.

The two happiest days in a boat owner's life are...

The day he buys the boat
The day he sells the boat.

it costs too much, especially the parking place in the dock.
I would never buy a boat to be used on the sea.
I think you'd spend less money renting one 2-3 times a year.
This way it doesn't get old too.

Make some calculations: mainteinance (can't be precise on this but whatever), taxes (if there are any), $$$ for the place in the dock where you keep it, gas (might cost much more if there are additional taxes on it), initial investment (distribuite it along the lifespan of the boat).

Afterwards calculate how many hours a year you could rent a boat for the same price.

Murlocs don't use boats. Everyone knows this.

I have a boat. 89 Regal 18.5 ft, mercruiser setup, and had it out yesterday at the lake with my wife and 3 boys. Fun fun fun.. tiring, but fun. They are expensive, not only for repairs, but also regular maintenance, but if you have the money, they are a blast to own.

If there are any good lakes, rivers, or streams near you, get a kayak.

Yeah, the Yacht Club looks expensive there

Actually at his age the SDYC isn't all that expensive. They have been trying for years to get younger people to join and they make it pretty reasonable for all that you get. They also arn't the only game in town. There's 3 yacht clubs and 3 other marinas in the Pt. Loma area alone that I can think of.

Make sure you launch it correctly:

Or if that is too much trouble, move to a better place:
