Well, damn. My 30gb is dead. I did the open-and-disconnect-battery thing and it came back on at the menu for a bit but then shut off due to battery dying (battery only lasts about 5 minutes at full charge anymore), now when it comes back on it either a)freezes or 2) (if I unplug the battery) it comes on, goes to a blackscreen, then the HD parks it's head and it reboots itself; see A.
Black Zune 30gb: December 1 2006 - December 31 2008. You had a good run.
Are the new HD-based Zune's the same physical size as the old 30gb model?

Enjoy your Zune that MS MIGHT be able to fix, and will more than likely require you to send it in, because when it frozen you can't even plug it in to do an update. I bet all 18,000 30 gig Zune owners will be sending them in at the same time. So you'll be without music for weeks, maybe more.
I'm glad I don't hate any company enough to say "I'll NEVER buy [product]!"
Is this the first wide spread HAREWARE bricking? I can't think of any others. MS has an amazing ability to fuck things up. I heard this was a story on CNN too. Steve Jobs has to be sitting back smiling after hearing about this.

to TallBill, you don't have to use iTunes with an iPod there are dozens of 3rd part apps for syncing it. Also you can use it as HD to store files, which is nice. The Zune, you have 1 choice the Zune software. It's not horrible, but it's not great either. And no other choices SUCKS.

Checks ipod, hmm works fine for me
you iPod folks... I can only imagine what would happen if the world lost the majority of their iPods for a few days or so. A damned revolt would occur, that's what! One good thing of Zune having a relatively small market share.
I'm charging up my Zune 30gb right now. The battery has been dead for awhile since I recently upgraded to the Zune 120gb. And funny, because I upgraded because of the battery, as well as the extra space and more flashy style. The 120gb's battery (and thus the 80gb's battery) lasts a LOT longer than the 30gb, both while playing songs, and apparently while idle as well, though haven't entirely confirmed that yet.
Or maybe I just a had a shitty battery on my 30gb. But I think it was short as hell.
honestly im only half-gloating because of all the crap ipods get on ATOT without any legitimate reason. Seems like just a big backlash against anything mainstream
I don't like the software or the interface of the iPod.

Early this morning we were alerted by our customers that there was a widespread issue affecting our 2006 model Zune 30GB devices (a large number of which are still actively being used). The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you?re a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device.

I dunno, you claim to not want to hate any company so much to never buy their products, but you seem to enjoy hating on the Zune.
I don't have much problems with Apple, I just dislike their products. iTunes does indeed suck hard, but yes you can use something else. However, that doesn't speak for the plain and boring GUI on the device.
Personally, I enjoy the Zune software, and you get the most out of it if you subscribe to Zune Pass. It's really built around the idea of having the subscription or at least making big use of the store, and it works very well for that. I never used it for that for the longest time, but recently subscribed to Zune Pass and I cannot look back now. And without the Pass, I still liked the Zune software, and never had problems navigating it. It feels fluid and easy to use, yet not so boring to look at. When you get used to other programs, it's a bit of a shock using Zune, but after using it for awhile, I'm very used to to it and it feels right now. Any usage complaints were gone once I adjusted.
Sure, you say you should never have to adjust to a program, but what's the good in making a program behave the same as everything else out there? I was used to Windows Media Player and Winamp, and I'm very happy with the latest style of the Zune software.
And the hardware interface is intuitive and flashy.

physically it may only be a little bit smaller, but it's actually a good bit thinner, and just feels so much better in the hand. It feels less like a big brick and feels like a well made player.

Not true! I use my zune in the car and download music on my PC. Then, I WIRELESSLY SYNC the zune from my car! Don't even have to bring the zune inside...
Waiting for ipod to be able to do that.

I was about to say.. the zune picks up fm radio better, syncs wirelessly better, provides free updates better, and provides a better store (10 free songs a month). So there are quite a few things.
