Have to say I'm happy I bought an 80Gb, though I'm sure this will get fixed quickly somehow.

Even CNN has this story now.

If I had one I'd wait till tomorrow to turn it on. It's probably a Leap day thing.

you iPod folks... I can only imagine what would happen if the world lost the majority of their iPods for a few days or so. A damned revolt would occur, that's what! One good thing of Zune having a relatively small market share.

I'm charging up my Zune 30gb right now. The battery has been dead for awhile since I recently upgraded to the Zune 120gb. And funny, because I upgraded because of the battery, as well as the extra space and more flashy style. The 120gb's battery (and thus the 80gb's battery) lasts a LOT longer than the 30gb, both while playing songs, and apparently while idle as well, though haven't entirely confirmed that yet.
Or maybe I just a had a shitty battery on my 30gb. But I think it was short as hell.

honestly im only half-gloating because of all the crap ipods get on ATOT without any legitimate reason. Seems like just a big backlash against anything mainstream

Well, that and it turns into a brick at midnight on new years eve. :D

From what I hear the zune software isn't much better.

I guess interface is a personal taste sort of thing but the clickwheel is pretty intuitive

I thought mine (30GB) was just frozen up this morning. It stayed on the booting screen and never went any further. Reset (back + up) didn't work. So I thought I would let the battery run dead and then take care of it when I went home and plugged it back in. Mind you, I've never had a single problem with mine.

Sure enough, I get home and see this thread. Plug it in and it freezes again on the booting screen.

This sucks.

ETA - A couple of weeks ago, I was prompted to update the Zune software but never did. Don't know if there was a firmware update as well at that time (there usually is) but didn't update that either.

It sucked in the beginning, but it's quite good now in my opinion.

The clickwheel was one of the things I hated about it and the secondary reason I returned mine, the primary reason being iTunes.

i prefer the zune software interface over iTunes.

i think the touch squircle of the zune is at least the equal to the touch wheel of the ipod.

and i think the twist interface of the zune > ipod. fm radio built in is excellent for listening to npr on my morning commutes. the bigger screen is a nice perk. and to top it off, subscription music is a bonus.

Anyone really think this was a "glitch"

My guess it was a test to see if hardware could be killed by pushing a software update and a triggered time.

This.

I don't have a need to 'go against the mainstream'. I get nothing out of it. I just prefer what I prefer for a variety of often strange reasons.
But KT covered why I like the Zune pretty well: I prefer the unit's interface, I prefer the software interface (this was rough at first, but it helped), and I preferred the hardware. Even though the Zune 30gb was/is ugly as sin, I preferred it to the iPod classic style, and maybe this was out of a deep desire to go against the grain. Dunno though.
But the current Zune 120gb, when I was looking to upgrade, captivated me basically. Finally the Zune actually has a look of quality on the outside as well, and couple that with a solid software package, great navigation (squircle is awesome), and my recent discovery of zune pass subscription... I'm quite happy with my Zune and would never switch. The Zune 80/120gb also has some damn fine audio quality, and nice improvement over the 30gb, which I still think sounded better than competitors (except Creative, I think they tend to have the best audio hardware for mp3 players)

edit:
yep, my 30gb died. Don't use it anyway though. I  my 120gb.

GF called me mad as hell. she's at work and her Zune won't work so she has no music to listen to on her break. I hope she doesn't think this means I'm going to give her my Touch

*goes off to listen to his Touch and LOL's at the Zune people*

the Zune sucks, thw software sucks, the stupid album art finder it has SUCKS. On my GF's for a lot of albums it downloaded totally incorrect art. For a Tupac song it was some white dude from the 60's with a huge white perm. I'd say it fucked up about 1/4th of her covers. At least iTunes won't add shit unless it's an exact match. The gestimation method MS uses fucking blows :)

I still love my Zune. I'll never own an ipod. Microsoft will get it fixed soon -- hopefully.

I never knew to much about the Zune till today. Now I'm trying out their music service and considering buying an 80gb Zune. Itunes is crap which has always kept me far away from the Ipod.

Yep, add me to the frozen screen club. I should have never even turned the damn thing on after reading this.

EDIT: Oh thank God I found the receipt from Best Buy. I don't even remember buying the 2 year replacement plan, but I did. I must have been cynical that day.

Enjoy your Zune that MS MIGHT be able to fix, and will more than likely require you to send it in, because when it frozen you can't even plug it in to do an update. I bet all 18,000 30 gig Zune owners will be sending them in at the same time. So you'll be without music for weeks, maybe more.

I'm glad I don't hate any company enough to say "I'll NEVER buy [product]!"

Is this the first wide spread HAREWARE bricking? I can't think of any others. MS has an amazing ability to fuck things up. I heard this was a story on CNN too. Steve Jobs has to be sitting back smiling after hearing about this.

*runs off to listen to music on his iPod Touch*

to TallBill, you don't have to use iTunes with an iPod there are dozens of 3rd part apps for syncing it. Also you can use it as HD to store files, which is nice. The Zune, you have 1 choice the Zune software. It's not horrible, but it's not great either. And no other choices SUCKS.

My parents are in town and by chance my Mom brought her 30GB Zune with her, I just checked it and sure enough it has the problem.
