<< so if you don't care about PQ, why invest in DVD's? why not just stick to VHS tapes if quality is not your prime agenda. >>

That is a stupid comparison since I only switched to DVD because they are a superior product even if the picture quality was identical to VHS. No rewindeing, the tape won't break, I can leave it on top of a magnet, etc.

<< HDTV really isnt THAT much better. Sure its super high resolution, but that means you have to either shell out thousands for a huge set, or get a small set and sit way too close to even notice the added resolution.

I read for a 27 inch HDV, you need to be 5.5 feet away. Your mom would die if she saw you that close.
>>

omg, that is the dumbest statment ive heard so far, HD Signal is in most cases better then DVD quality. you obviously havent seen it.

I've seen it, and it is better, but regardless, your eyes can see only so much.

I dont think its so much the picture format, but the quality of the TV itself. Obviously a $3000 HDTV is going to be built to higher standards than a $300 NTSC.

ignorance is bliss isnt it?
>>

What ignorance? I have seen HDTV and I just don't care about picture quality that much since I only watch a few hours of TV a week. My computer monitor makes my DVDs look just fine to me.

<< HDTV is stupid.

you're stupid.

If you insist but I know the truth.

You're an odd bird, there, yakko. I only hope that you're easier to get along with in person.

I don't watch regular TV much so it doesn't really concern me. I got my 50" Toshiba 16:9 HDTV for $2200 including tax and I've been lovin' my DVDs and Xbox.

Now I just need a progressive DVD player to REALLY take advantage of this sucker.

You know the only people that bad mouth HDTV are the people that don't have the sets or can't afford them. I have a Toshiba 40" 16:9 widescreen set that looks awesome with any signal you feed it. I bought it more for DVD movies but once you've seen The Patriot in HDTV, there's no going back to boring 4:3 Wegas or some other boring standard TV.

bump to the top for all the tension this thread has caused. Kind of makes you think. I wonder why my perfectly fine thread, although a duplicate thread, was locked almost right away. Maybe the mod just bought a $3000 "HDTV." The more I think about, the more l like the forums where the mods aren't so an@l.

i saw ur thread. it was about five above this one on the list. they are really strict about trying not to allow duplicate threads. plus it makes more sense to keep the comments on one topic in one thread. makes it easier to follow.

I can afford one if I wanted but not everyone goes apesh!t over picture quality. I prefer sound quality but I can't afford what I want.

I'll stick to my 8 year old 25" Stereo tv until it dies, they no longer broadcast ntsc signals, or I can get a hdtv with the same vertical height as my 25" tv (If I recall correctly in hdtv the horizontal measurement is a lot larger) for $250

actually thats wrong. I can afford the HDTV but as much as we (wife and I) watch tv (maybe 8-12 hours a week and thats mainly rented DVD's) investing $2-4k for a tv would be silly.
My dad has a 52inch HDTV and I can honestly say I can not justify spending $3000 on a tv when I spent $900 on a nice 50inch one.

oh and making such broad statments just make you look like an idiot.

you stated that you didn't care about quality, that is why i compared the quality of VHS tapes with DVD's.

so what will you do when HD-DVD hits the streets, will you then invest in HDTV, since HD-DVD will have the same benefits of DVD's with twice the picture quality?

Whenever I see HDTV's in stores they look terrible. You can tell instantly that it is a digital picture, and not because its clear.

Obviously they aren't calibrated at the store. This is why you bring your own copy of AVIA when you go shopping for a new HDTV set. ;)

and because the brightness and contrast are cranked up to 100% as well. you should go to a professional store if you really want to see HDTV.

No I won't buy them since they will cost more. I am happy with the picture quality I have. I am not happy with the sound quality but like I said I can't afford what I want.

Aww you just had to bump this didnt you... Oh well pretty big news for us HDTV owners. Discovery announced HDTV Theater today.

http://www.tvinsite.com/index.asp?layout=story&doc_id=81464&vertical=TVinsite&industry=u&display=breakingNews

And also were rumored to get showtime in HD too..... as well as possibly 2 more HDnet channels (the last 3 channels are unconfirmed as of yet but Marc Cuban has said that he want to get 2 more channels on the sattelite) Maybe HDTv si finally taking hold. Now if only my locals could get their act together and get on the air with HDTV, I sould be set. :)

if you are truely happy with dvd quality then you are just stupid. if you are happy because its great and all you can afford right now then your normal.

<< Whenever I see HDTV's in stores they look terrible. You can tell instantly that it is a digital picture, and not because its clear. >>

well you've been duped probably. many stores feed a regular signal to their hdtvs. they don't bother setting them up correctly at all. many frys stores i've been to certainly don't, its pathetic. hdtv with hd signal looks undeniably better then normal tv.. and pixels? i think not, its clear as we've seen so far. that being said, you can tell when a hdtv is being fed only dvd.. its just not as clear. good hdtv is as close to film as i've ever seen in a home.
