Anyone out there that bought HDTV's are you worried about Obsolesence?

<< While on the Subject of HDTV Dept.: For some odd reason, I feel disgusted and at the same time vindicated by the most recent fiasco regarding HDTV. I have been skeptical of this rollout and urging caution since it was first proposed as an analog system requiring expensive gallium arsenide circuits to work. It appears that the new copy-protection schemes being dreamed up by Hollywood will make every single HDTV set sold to date obsolete. And buyers of new sets are not being told about this situation in a dubious attempt to dump very expensive inventory. I'm sure those of you who spent $5,000 to $10,000 for what may become an albatross are going to love reading this.

What happened was that the Hollywood folks, who are just freaked over the possibility that we'll be copying HDTV movies, have promoted copy protection that requires the decode circuit to be built into the display, not into the set-top box. This requires the set-top box to send a signal to a connector that new HDTV sets will have. If you're thinking of buying an HDTV, don't, unless it has this connector and circuit?whenever they are finalized. I suspect that this copy protection mechanism will be used for certain broadcasts, too, since there has been a lot of talk about copy-protecting DSS and other transmissions.

The concept is that when copy protection is put within the circuitry of the display, you can't decode something with a set-top box and then grab the signal as it comes out of the box and before it gets to the screen.

Meanwhile, the HDTV-promoting Consumer Electronics Association is going to eat crow if all the current HDTV sets turn out to be white elephants. I see no evidence that this mess will be resolved without a lot of burned consumers. All the Hollywood studios are belatedly demanding the new system. I suppose an expensive retrofit could be developed, but it probably won't be. Nothing is designed nowadays for fixing or retrofitting.
And I'm guessing that those expensive set-top boxes will also have to be replaced. According to most sources, all the latest schemes allow copy-protected broadcasts and movies to be viewed on the old HDTV sets, but they will fall back to lower resolution. Welcome to the bleeding edge. Anyone even thinking of getting HDTV before this issue is completely resolved is just throwing money away. Funny how your local newspaper or TV station hasn't been covering this consumer issue, isn't it?

This is from John Dvoraks latest column.

he seems to think they will all be obsolete.

It's way too early to be worried. Look how long it took them to come up with a standard. I'm glad I went with my VVega though.🙂

I'm glad I went with my $2000 NEC Lt150 HD capable front projector... 🙂 It is a 100 inch HDTV, but it is also a regular SVGA projector, so I can turn around and sell it for virtually no loss...

Ahh the joy of HDtv....

I have a feeling if this comes to pass, the folks with 1st gen TV's will get their true HDTV (via hack) and will be the only folks able to record anything from it.

HDTV is just a plain joke. I'm totally satisfied with my six year old Prologic stereo connected to my three-year old 27" NTSC.

Can somebody tell me what percentage of broadcasts in the country are even in HDTV format?

I see at least one HDTV being sold at the local best buy every time I go there, and I don't even think HDTV is offered here in Iowa.

I guess you've never seen HDTV then. It's kind of the sort of thing you don't know you're missing till you see it. I was in best buy looking at their HDTv setups and it looks like DVD - except it's regular television. It's nice. And in regards to your prologic the same thing. When you're watching a movie with 5.1 only then can you appreciate what you've been missing 🙂

HDTV- I have a Samsung 32" 4:3. Cost more than a regular TV, but not thousands more like it used to be. Now you may spend as much as you please or can afford, but in any case the difference is substantial. AT&T here offers digital tv, but not hdtv yet. Still, my set gives a far superior picture compared to my old TV. As far as HDTV content goes, it is sparse. For me, I would have to go satellite. I havent made that move and am not likely to. I DO have a progressive DVD (and as far as I am concerned the difference between it and "regular" DVD is more than enough to make me feel this is a must have item. Cant see p-DVD quality on a non digital set though. As the majority of what I watch is DVD's it was worth the price alone.

HDTV's are not that much more expensive than regular TV's. We have a Mitisubishi 46" HDTV which cost like $2-3k.

If they change the format, there will always be a hack. Our Mitsu has RGB inputs for HDTV - as long as the receiver puts out an RGB signal, you're set.

HDTV kicks major butt in terms of quality. When you compare NTSC vs. HDTV on a 120" projection screen (yes, we have a Sony VPH-D50Q with a 120" screen), you will be blown away.

Any of you guys who have HDTV, Chicken Run is on right now on HBO. It is a very good transfer and looks 50 times better than the DVD...

farking hollywood! how am i supposed to timeshift anything if this goes through :|

dvorak would yell fire in a hospital if he thought it would sell more issues, i dont value his opinion at all.

<< I am happy with my 18 year old 19" TV or when I use my computer as a TV.

ignorance is bliss isnt it?

HDTV is stupid.

What ignorance? I have seen HDTV and I just don't care about picture quality that much since I only watch a few hours of TV a week. My computer monitor makes my DVDs look just fine to me.

If you insist but I know the truth.

HDTV really isnt THAT much better. Sure its super high resolution, but that means you have to either shell out thousands for a huge set, or get a small set and sit way too close to even notice the added resolution.

I read for a 27 inch HDV, you need to be 5.5 feet away. Your mom would die if she saw you that close.

Dont get me wrong, its not that I dont think HDTV is an improvment, its just not worth the money right now. And it seems like its going to be a long time until it is, at least another decade from 2006, which is the proposed switchover.

And for the love of god, why didnt they do away with interlacing?

I have a SDTV rptv and actually don't see that much difference to a hd set. If I feel a need I will add a video multiplier(analog progressive) and it will be almost as good.

This topic was discussed last week.

You can pick up a nice 53" (or larger) 16:9 HDTV for 3000.00 or less if you shop smart.

I bet you have a wonderful experience watching DVD's on a 21" or smaller 4:3 CRT monitor.

so if you don't care about PQ, why invest in DVD's? why not just stick to VHS tapes if quality is not your prime agenda.

i'm pretty happy with my Panny 56" HDTV, and my VHS recorder is in the trash.
