Anyone order HD6870 Sapphire cards from Newegg, and have them come opened?

Just wondering. I ordered one HD6870, then I ordered another one (which became two), so I have three total. The original one, and one of the ones of this recent order (haven't looked at the other one), have one of the seal tapes on the edge of the outside box loose, not secure. It's not cut, but I'm wondering if they come off during shipping or what? Or has someone been testing the cards. The first card I got, when I saw that the tape was opened, I pulled the card out to verify that it was in there. There was a padded anti-static bag, also not sealed in any way, folded around the card. The card had two DVI, two mini-DP, and an HDMI or mini-HDMI, so given the number of connectors, I assume it is indeed the HD6870 card.

Call Newegg.. and tell them what you have just written.. If Newegg says it is new but has arrived opened then.. there is something wrong. I personally would return these cards and ask Newegg to ship me another "new" card.

The one I got here - Sapphire? - came in a properly sealed retail box.

Take a look at the pci-e 'gold' contact pads. You can usually see marks on both sides where the slot grabs them.
My opinion is , you probably have a new card. They sell open box items, open box. They have a very good public rep of not playing games with people.

yes, and it's unlikely that they have that many returns already on 6870 anyway. cards should be ok imho.

Most likely the tape just came off the edges. I wouldn't worry too much about it at all.

A friend of mine got a MSI 6850 card that had no shrink wrapping on the package, and was missing the DVI dongle.

He couldn't be without a video card, since it is a new build, so I believe he just accepted it. Newegg claimed that is how they ship them. I have my doubts.

That's my current working theory. I was just wondering if this had happened to anyone else, hence this thread.

I'm going to test each one pretty good once I build the rig that they are going into (in the next two weeks). That should give me a week or more to RMA them if they are actually bad.

I had a sapphire 5830 with the tape unsealed as well from newegg. Not sure why i didn't post that in my original post haha

you can usually tell if a card is new by rubbing the heatsink.

There should be a new feel to it. You know that feel when you open a brand new cd?

That is interesting. I got a Sapphire 5870 today from Newegg and it came exactly like you described your card. The tape was loose, the card wasn't sealed in the anti static bag and worst of all, the card didn't work.

I received my Sapphire HD6870 from New Egg close to release day and it came in perfectly sealed. I doubt New Egg would intentionally send you something they knew was not right, but don’t hesitate to contact them and raise your concerns.

My Sapphire 6850 from Newegg had the tape seal firmly attached to the outer box, but the anti-static bag inside did not have any kind of seal.

My first Asus 5850 came from Amazon with the shrink wrap gone and the seals broken. I opened it and the card SN didn't match the one on the box either. I was pissed, but I tested the card and it worked fine. Now I'm glad I kept it, it's been the best OCing 5850 I've ever seen.

Mabe its all the returns from the people who found they overclock like crap? So they saved some money and grabbed a 6850.

That sounds pretty shady all around. I wonder if people at some level of the distribution aren't popping open boxes to look for highly overclockable parts.

I bought an xfx 5870 from Newegg and it came similar as described in the OP and it was always finicky. The box was sealed but the anti static bag seal was torn and there were a couple of finger prints on it. Immediately it was suffering from the green pixel problem then random artifacts on 2d. Then it started to work fine for a while. All of a sudden it just started blue screening. Needless to say the card was RMA'ed and the replacement is due back to me tomorrow. I would have returned it long ago but I wasn't entirely convinced it was the card but possibly drivers. Plus I didn't feel like going through an RMA. I figured I would just dick around with the card until it died since it had a lifetime warranty. I'll admit I kind wanted it to last long enough till it was EOL and I could get a free upgrade to something newer.

Now Im just keeping my fingers crossed that it is a reference version like I initially had. I made certain to tell them that a non reference version was not acceptable. The support guys did tell me it would be the same exact model.

*** edit, the card I got back is a nonference card and now I'm pissed..... What to do?

Mine was clean, but I bought on release day- not like there was much chance of getting a return. . .
