anyone on Atkins?

I've been on it three times and 2 of those times I failed because I was simply weak (gave into cookie cravings).. Now that I have high blood pressure (at 22!) I'm pretty hardcore about the thing.. On 3rd day of induction - anyone have any experiences/results/advice to share? From my own experience, I find that this time is going a little bit easier since I eat plenty of salad and drink TONS of water... Also, I take lots of vitamins and some pottasium pills.. So far I've GAINED 3 pounds but I'm guessing I'm just retaining water..

I think people whoi start diet threads should have to post pics of themselves w/ no shirts on, with weelkly updates.... give them incentive to stick with it, so that all of ATOT doesn't call them a fatass 😉

Seriosuly though, good luck, but the Atkins diet has been quite the subject of controversy on here lately.... personally I'm not al lthat convinced by it.

Probably true.. But my high blood pressure's due to my obesity.. Figure I'll work on the fat first by atkins and exercise and then worry about my blood pressure..

I'm pretty sure there's a private topic about it. Don't know who has the permissions for it though.

I'm not on the Atkins Diet but I have changed my eating habits and am working out. I don't have high blood pressure but b/c my mom diabetic I need to watch my weight and such to avoid adult onset (Type 2?)

G'luck though.

You're gaining weight on Atkins induction? That doesn't make sense to me. Induction lowers carbs so drastically that the body's response is to get rid of water (as opposed to holding onto it). That's why a lot of people like Atkins so much in the beginning--it's possible to see the scale drop several pounds in the first days, when the reality is that it's just water weight.

I'd look into exactly what you're eating and watch for hidden carbohydrates. After three days of induction you SHOULD be in ketosis. Get some ketostix from the drug store and prove it to yourself. If the stix show you're not in ketosis then you're not doing the induction phase correctly. Write down EVERYTHING you eat and how much carbs they contain. Read food labels and watch for "hidden carbs".

Good luck

Well, I think my sodium intake is pretty high so I'm retaining water.. Hotdogs, bacon, and pepperoni's what I used for snacking.. Low carbs but really nasty/unhealthy stuff with a crapload of sodium (not good especially since I have high blood pressure)...I've cut the stuff out now so I shouldn't be retaining as much water..

Actually, after I was on the diet a couple of months, my blood pressure dropped from 120/82 to 110/60. It wasnt too bad to begin with, but its at a real optimum level now. It can lower your blood pressure, improve your cholesterol ratio, lower tryglicerides. My triglycerides dropped like 30% in that time frame.

Edit: freedomsbeat212 - are you following the induction properly? Make sure you're counting the carbs - max of 20 g a day. You can expect to lose around 10 pounds in the 1st 2 weeks, I lost around 7-8 pounds. It takes a couple of days to start losing weight, but when you start losing, it comes off fast. I've slowed down drastically now, but only because I'm close to my ideal weight.

Hey, I haven't actually counted carbs lately.. I'm sticking to only meats, some nuts (about a hand full of almonds a day) and some cheddar cheese..I'll start actually counting if don't lose anything tomorrow

To it right, you really should count carbs. And, you're not supposed to have nuts during induction.

freedoms... If you haven't read the book yet, you must get it ASAP and read, read, read! If you don't follow the plan correctly, you will have zero results.

Doing any kind of diet/nutritional plan without the proper education is a very bad idea.

In the meantime... Here is a link from the Atkins site about high blood pressure... Managing Hypertension the Atkins Way

As for those who say that Atkins "won't help" hypertension... Keep in mind that losing weight is the very best way to combat high blood pressure.

Maybe you should post a pic of your penis everytime you act like a prick so we can laugh at home small it is?

LOL!

notfred, you seem to post something similar in each low carb thread that comes about. Have you tried or researched this type of nutritional plan, or are you just spouting that which you are not educated about?

Hardcore? After 3 days? LOL! I've been low-carbing for FIVE MONTHS now. Granted, not on Atkins, but a similar diet for bodybuilders. Fat loss is much slower, but no muscle is lost in the process, unlike with Atkins. But i'm LOVING the results. I used to be 225lbs, but now i'm down to 180 and my body looks awesome. When i get to 165 by the end of the summer, i'm gonna have a near-perfect six-pack and everything. 🙂

If any of you have read the book, then you would be less scrutinizing of Atkins.

After a week with my roommate on it, I went on it myself and lost 30 pounds in the first 30 days. I was very excited about it. My blood pressure dropped signifcantly, from 140/85 to 110/60. I'm 22, and 6'4". My start weight as ~330. Sure, you might call me a fatass, but I had only 17% of Bodyfat then. I am extremely big and have a lot of muscle. My legs which aren't fat, are 32" around. That's as large as many small men are around the waist. I used to always be active in highschool too with football and weightlifting. I even dropped down to 200 in HS due to running. Of course 4 years of college had it in for me, and the gaining began.

So anyways...read the book before you judge.

There is an even better way to kickstart your body into ketosis. It's to use a different technique which is in around chapter 13. It is a 1000 calorie a day diet, composed of 90% fats. For me, personally, I am not losing the weight fast enough. My energy has spiked, and the amount of weightlifting/torture I'm putting myself through is great, but I feel that my metabolic resistance is high, as I used to be able to drop weight way faster. Of course I am also making myself feel lighter, by constantly wearing 5lbs./leg weights around the house. You get used to it after ~2 hours and if you sleep in it and stuff, then you'll be feeling GREAT when you take it off. 😀

So...if you're a skeptic, try it. If you're not a doctor, don't tell people what isn't healthy, it's not your body. Everything is healthy when your body is in the correct mode. Some animals are carnivores and eat NOTHING but meat. You NEVER see a fat animal that hasn't been corrupted by humans, do you? Point proven.

Good luck with everything,
GermyBoy
