Anyone notice the CP/M client crashes Token Ring Networks?

I dunno, this client might not be stable at all. Not inly that but an unusual number of network resources was used. Anyone else notice this trend?

I upgraded 6 PCs to version 0.7.2 yesterday and I immediatly noticed unusual traffic. Seems all the free tokens in the token ring network we immediatly used up by the client. The only fix was the break the ring. In addition I noticed an unusual number of threads as the client seemed to launch several instances of itself. Both IDSN lines also began to dial at random. How strange?

The system include:
2 x Pentium Classic 266Mhz w/ 1MB pipeline burst cache
64MB PC33 SDRAM
800MB Bernoulli Hard Drive

2 x Pentium III 400Mhz w/ 256k Advanced Transfer Cache
256MB EDO RAM
6.8GB Iomega Jaz Drive

1 x Pentium4 1.2Ghz w/ 512 Cache
512MB PC400 RDRAM
72GB SCSI4 U360 Hard Drive

1 x AMD K6-4 600Mhz w/ 1MB L3 Cache
128MB PC600 RDRAM
20GB Serial IDE Hard Drive

All system have gigabit token ring adapters.

Opinions? Please provide ANYTHING you think will help no matter how weird it might seem? Just sure it actually might do some good.

Very disturbing. I noticed the diversity of the systems and I'm wondering if the client was thoroughly tested before being released to the public for use on all of the hardware. This could be a problem! :(

edit: could it be a frame-type mismatch on the Token ring?

I also noticed that each block written to the hard drive cause the drive head to contact the platters to create bad sectors in the Mylar plastic of the platters.

Are you sure that you configured the client correctly. I believe that every client should be drawing data from the next in a configuration like this, but that may be the problem. Instead, try to have each client bump its way to a proxy, and draw its data from there. It should stabilize things a bit if its having to cross-talk too much.:)

Crosstalk? I am using category 2 coax which falls within specs. So a proxy will help? can I set it up in one of the PC or will I need a standalone system?

I think you need a Crisco router that's specially configured to work with a Sun box in order to get the proxy working.

There wouldn't have happened to be any instances of UT or Quake3 running at the same time, would there? ;):D;)

edit: as for the proxy, maybe you should set that up on a laptop so you can take it with you. Make sure you have a bit of extra RAM in there in case it runs low on memory, because laptop batteries run low faster if it has to access the hard drive, it being a mechanical device as opposed to strictly an electronic one.

Thanks ViRGE, I'll stop at Radio Shack before I get in to work to pick one up. Hopefully I can clean it all up before my boss get's into the office. :(

Mech, I have Q3 running as a system service on all of the PCs.

You can do it without a router if you have broadband internet access, *AND* your network uses a DNS. Otherwhise packets may end up in an infinite loop on the network, clogging up the resources.

LeBlatt, will I need a DHCP, BOOTP, or NETQ server?

I really appreciate everyone's help. I can;t beleive the mess I got myself into.

i am having a strange problem with my computers too. I just got my Layer 4 Terabit Ethernet Switch from Cisco(got it used, $400 not bad.) and 6 cards for my machines. Whenever I use the 9.01337 client the tx and rx lights flash in a scrolling pattern. Also, when I play quake all the characters are skinned with 64bit keys. Using the 9.0420 client however works nicely

DHCP is optional, I find it easier than setting up each client individually (heh, I love words that have "dually" inside).

/edit : As for BOOTP ant NETQ, I've never had a chance to use them, so you can try without.

I couldn't get to Radio Shack this morning to pick up the Sun system so I'll check after work.

Wish me luck.

No, didn't have time to start a new PProxy. Right now the work around is using a network sniffer to capture unclaimed tokens that stay in the ring and inject unused tokens in free up resources. Looks like I'll have to be in this weekend. :(

I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
