Anyone notice it's not the most expensive cars that get attention?

No Lifer
I have mostly had the cars that not everyone else did. I have noticed on more than one occasion, I could literally be pulling in right behind a 6 figure vehicle (I live in Palm Beach County so it's not uncommon) and yet my car gets the looks and what not.

We had a company party at the Breaker's hotel last night and there was a large tailed Porsche of some sort right in front of me in the valet line, yet quite a few of the guys came over to look at my 1998 240SX SX (it's in basically brand new condition)....my wife was impressed that a 'silvia, which is hardly an expensive car in Japan' got so much attention over a near exotic. On return of the car another valet commented 'man that's really tight'. 🙂

My 1966 GT probably got the most attention of any car I have owned...that car was a fully restored to all NOS or better parts. I spent most of one summer just painting every bolt head and polishing the screws (stainless).

Anyways...it seems around here anyway it's not how much the car cost, but how little you see it.

I would imagine though that a Yugo Cabriolet may be the exception to this.

I think you have a valid point. If I drive my 57 T-Bird or my 66 Shelby G.T.350H I get more looks and attention than I did the day I drove a Ferrari around all over town. In fact, I can't be in a hurry to get anywhere when driving the Shelby because EVERYONE has to ask quetisons and look under the hood so it can take all day to go to town and back.

BTW. Those valet guys were just screwing with you because you thought you looked so hot in your 240. I know I would have. Sadly, you bought it.

Hey another Tbird owner! I have a 56. When my brother was driving it, he had a Porsche driver ask him if he wanted to trade cars, and that Posrsche guy would throw in another $20-30k.

maybe so, but i'll still take a 6 figure near exotic over anythign else mentioned in this thread 😀

A dentist friend of my family was restoring a 57 (I think it's the same car really) during my mustang restoration...he mentioned it got more people stopping him in traffic than any of the cars he had (he has a stable of like 10 vehicles all mint....hell the guy made news because a baseball jersey worth $150k as stolen from his home)

Didn't know you lived in FL. I'm in Broward.

I love the 240sx. It's rare for me to see one that's in good or decent condition though.. most of the ones that I see need a new paint job, especially the S13s. Don't see as many S14s, but my uncle's neighbor has one. It's a '97 or '98 (I'm not sure) with the kouki front.

Hmm personally i would still take the Porsche

Two weeks later the T-Bird broke down. I just asked my brother about it again, he said the Porsche was kinda old, like the Redford's green one in Spy Game.

cool...most don't realize combined the 97/98 model years totalled only 5000 units (give or take a few)...out of these only a fraction were the SE/LE with suspension goodies and the 5 lug wheels. Mine has a total of three barely noticable dings that even I have a hard time finding knowing where they are.

Now that drifting is the craze so many are being bought up by rich kids (nothing against them) and totalled in a week because they think a 'drift car' gives one the arcane ability to be Parnelli Jones [ford referrance] and then hit a tree, house, parked car, etc.

It came down to the 87-89 (I wanted only 88 Turbo S or 89 Turbos originally) 944's...or the 240SX. I tried to find a Porsche but they looked so nice on the outside, only 20k-30k miles a lot of them, but their interiors had cracks and fade that almost 20 years brings....the garage queens commanded 25k+, my goal was buying at up to $15k and being $20k out the door once done. My own personal value on car ownership. I would love to drive a 7 figure car, don't get me wrong, but not as a daily driver in Florida. Too many old people and SUVs.

I am actually glad now I picked the 240SX...more practical, but the trunk still sucks. If the Fuel tank was horizontally mounted/smalled and the 'hump' removed....you could actually carry more than just a weekend set of bags. I need to go to the vet next week and it will be full with only two cat carriers (one in the trunk and one on the rear seat back folded down)....

I hate 'drifting' though...1) it's just fuxored on your tires 2) it's the slowest way through a turn and 3) draws too much attention for fast driving.

In my mustangs especially the 88 T-Top GT, cops would just find me. I have passed two patrol cars now in my 240 at 15mph over and they didn't even bat an eye...although I almost had a coniption (sp), no tickets in a while now....don't want to lose that insurance discount.

matrix, the element and scions aren't my thing, but I am going to say when talking cars they get brought up alot.

Those are like the ultimate cool practical cars.

i say a BMW M-coupe would fetch the attention of real car buffs. people who don't know cars only look for the bling bling, the hood scoop and the giant spoiler.
