Anyone missing a portion/all of a digit(s)?

I haven't but my granddad had his little finger ripped off in a fall off a ladder. The doctor made it look like he never had a pinkie on that hand. It bothered him the rest of his life and he made a leather device to cover the nerves so it didn't bother so much. I don't remember which hand as he died 20 years ago.

Haven't been on in awhile so a bit of an update for anyone who cares. Finger is healing nicely according to my ortho and the wound care specialist. My ortho said he wanted me to do physical therapy but I've yet to get a referral, and my wound care guy said I've got great movement in my thumb and should probably hold off on the P/T until the injury is fully sealed up. Not sure which way to go, but the latter makes sense. Anyways, pain has gone down considerably with the exception of my thumb feeling like it's being either severely pinched or my skin is being stretched. Hard to explain. And the nerve/shock pain or my thumb is falling asleep x100. Good thing is these symptoms are getting less frequent. I'm pretty much off the vicodin but still taking pills for the nerve pain. I'll probably take those till I run out and see how it feels without. On a side note, my thumb looks gross, dead skin and scabbing with a little puss whenever I change bandages, but the specialist said it looks really good and better than most. I'm constantly worried about an infection, but this makes me feel better. Sorry for the wall of text, just thought I'd share.

Yeah, holding off on physical therapy until it's healed is a great idea. Since it's just the tip (heh) and you have great movement, it doesn't sound like you'll have to worry about breaking up a ton of scar tissue. Probably just a few sessions and home exercises will be enough.

He's credited with sorta inventing low-tuned metal as a result of this, he tuned his guitars down to C because there was way less tension and it was easier for him to play, and it ended up inspiring an entire genre of music and untold bands.

Really, they're not bad. I thought I'd post some pics of my thumb's transgressions. It's been feeling way better and I'm finally able to not go around with a sleeve or bandage. It's finally closed up basically. So, the order is from Day 1 (first 2 pics) to present, a few weeks in between photos:

Anyways, at least for now, this kinda ends my "journal" of my accident. I've got pretty much no feeling at the tip, and little needle prick like feelings on the sides when I touch something. As PT happens, I should be able to put pressure and actually get used to grabbing things with what's left. We'll see...

Did they numb the area and yank it or were you sedated, or just yank it mafia style?

I actually had surgery so anesthesia. I was out for about 45 mins while they operated and just took it off at that time. First time I've had surgery or was knocked out. Pretty weird feeling.

That looks painful, no not to me, I mean it must have been painful for you. Thanks for sharing. I hope you adapt well and don't let it bother you, at least psychologically if you know what I mean.

I've had a few surgeries including where they knock you out. Shoulder surgery, foot surgery, colonoscopies. It's no biggie, the anesthesia, they are very good at it these days. Wonderful thing, anesthesia. To think that a couple hundred years ago they had, what? Whiskey? And they didn't even know what caused infections.

Haha I'm not sure I'm worthy of the Coolcoin based on how it happened. Besides, I wouldn't even know what to do with any of that crypto-currency stuff!

I don't really remember taking the x-ray. I was so drugged up I only remember bits and pieces. I do remember the most painful part was localizing the numbness. The PA gave me 3 shots right in the flesh. That was probably the most pain of the whole ordeal.

Could have been worse I guess, it looks like it was uhh, just the tip. Still sucks though, probably still affects usability I imagine.

I actually had a close call with my mitre saw years back, it was one of those moments where you unplug it, and sit back and think. Basically I was cutting a small piece of wood and it got caught on the blade and "sucked" my hand towards it. I let go the piece fast enough, but it still got me to sit and think about how much worse that could have been and to be more careful. As a kid when I first started to play with power tools I was extra careful but as you gain more experience you tend to get a little too comfortable.

Brings back memories, looks just like my index finger did after getting smashed off. Mine wasn't quite as far back though. Skin receded and I have enough of a nail that you have to focus on it to see that something is off.
