it was my understanding that many common locks would render bump-keys useless if they were installed upside down. I'll see if I can dig up where I read that

*edit* eh....looks like it's not true.

I bought a set off ebay, but after trying hundreds of times, many different ways, none successful. I'm real surprised I can't get em working, the videos make it look so easy.

All those videos saying you can file your own are a bunch of bull, unless you can file very precisely, there's a very slim chance you will be able to file a regular key into a bump key. So that's why i bought a set. Nothing doing though, can't open any locks. I've tried filing the tip and shoulder of the key (although you shouldn't need to anyway unless you're doing the minimal movement method). The keys are all perfectly cut, but I can't get them to work anywhere for some reason. I'm thinking bump keys might be overrated.

FYI...Anyone that bumps into my place should be wearing total kevlar suits as the .40's will be flying...;)

Did you match the keys/locks? I broke into the deadbolt of my apartment easily, but the bottom lock is a BS lock I've never seen before on ANY door, so I can't get in yet. I broke into the front door of my apartment complex because they use a commonly used lock. I haven't tried the mailbox yet, but I do believe I have the right key for it also.

I bought the set of 8 on ebay and it wroks nicely. IT takes a while to get used to, but I just tapped the back with my screwdriver.

Do they make anti-bump key locks, yet?

Bumping only works on pin-tumbler locks (i.e. not lever, disc or magnetic locks), and it generally works on all pin tumbler locks (including dimple locks) with a couple of major exceptions.

The major exceptions are:

Medeco/Chubb biaxial locks (these are the ones where the pins have to twist as they are lifted)

Locks using a sidebar (like Assa Twin) - however, these can be bumped if the sidebar on your bump key matches the sidebar the lock is expecting.

Personally, if I was looking for a new lock - I'd go for a disc lock. Disc locks are reliable, the keys are very strong, and they are essentially impossible to pick and bump.

Yeah, i've tried on 3 Kwikset locks (all i can find really) and tried a padlock with my padlock key. I can't imagine i'd need to file anymore off of my Kwikset key, I've already took off way too much already, but it didn't work before so i just kept filing and filing hoping it would work.

I'm really starting to think bump keys don't really exist and it's all a conspiracy :p - Really though, I've now ordered two different sets from fleabay (that may be my problem right there), have tried around 500 bumps and havn't had one successful bump. What's even crazier is that some people say they can file their own bump keys, I don't think many people could file that percisely. So either I got bad sets of bump keys both times (from diff people), or it's not nearly as easy as it looks.
