Anyone made speaker stands?

You might want to check out AVSforum and Hometheaterforum.

Off the top of my head, I think Kaido here has built his own speaker stands (I could be wrong though).
 
I'm kinda pissed because I couldn't find an easy way to make it on my trip to homedepot today.

I thought about using aluminum tubing but that stuff is EXPENSIVE! I saw painted wood thats made for shelf tops and it was very cheap. However, the edges won't be painted anymore once i start cutting it and I don't want to buy a can of paint just for a few strips(i want it in black btw). I really don't want it to look ghetto (I already have a design in my mind), the problem is mainly the process since I don't have the proper power tools.

Luckily I found two speaker stands on the curb one day and brought them home 🙂

I got a good year of use out of them, but now I have four floorstanders in my 5.1 system so I don't need them anymore.

You're not in the Milwaukee area by and chance, are you?
 
Yeah, you do want to have them at close to ear level if possible.

Placement tips

What kind of speakers do you have? Maybe there's a fade control for the back speakers... or you could adjust the levels in your sound utility program...
 
they are just x-530, nothing heavy duty.😱
right now i am playing the back at full volume and front + center at half just to off set the uneven level
 
rear left speaker is between my bed and the door
rear right is under a coat hanger

I have the front right facing the right wall so that when the sound bounces, it will be about the same distance to me as with the front left. Is that logic correct? Does it matter when the sub is placed? I really dont have much choice for placement because of the wire lengths, and again I dont want to spend money on extensions.

Yeah, I just figured since it is easier to buy stain in small amts...and cheaper I think.

Edit: I would think this is possible with only a...wait, do you even have a drill? If you have a drill then you should be ok.
 
hehe, i used to do it mega ghetto style...

I used an old shoebox, stuck the long dimension to the wall using doublestick foam tape. I then made 2 identical circles from some string lying around with circumference roughly 2 feet.

I screwed hooks into the wall roughtly 4" above the shoebox, 1" from the left side of the box, and the other 1" from the right side. Sliped the string in one from the left side, one from the right side such that the loop made more of a triangular shape (string touched box on the wallside, and on the bottom and from the bottom, cut diagonally back to the wall on top of the box.

This did not look good at all, however, my soundfield was perfect. Ahh, the sacrifices we make for good sound 😀

🙂 sounds like fun.

My first 4.1 set that came with a computer I got was extremely sh!tty. The wires were also really short. I ended up handing them from my ceiling at about the midpoint of the room behind me to the right and left. I made little cradles for them out of strips of paper and hung them by their speaker cords since they weighed practically nothing.

I'd hate to think of what type of apparatus I'd need to hang my current speakers :laugh:

I wish I could be so lucky to find speaker stands out on the curb, even though I'm sure many people throw them away every day. I would probably have luck at rummage sales too, but I hate going for something specifically becuase you never find it then. Do you know if cabinet spikes really affect the sound?

I'm not sure if it's a noticable difference....

I'm using them just to get as much height as I can on my speakers right now. I need some risers.
