No, not the way I think you're looking at, but my mom has lost two modems and a sound card to lightning coming through the phone line.

Nope,if you`re really worried you can always strip naked to reduce SE and stick your foot on a radiator pipe that`s grounded ;).

Not personally, but some of the hardware we use at work is super sensitive, and expensive enough to worry about it. I've seen some horrible wrecks from people that got careless. Then again, this isn't run of the mill PC hardware either...

I haven't lost anything to static, but I did lose a motherboard and CPU to a power surge. The fooging thing was hooked up to a surge protector at the time too

Never. I also have never used a static band or taken any other precautions.

Hell, I have had parts sit on carpet and other surfaces for months and they still work fine.

Recently I was putting my PDA in the cradle, and the static discharge went through the case and I saw the arc at the bottom connector. Scary, but everything still works fine.

I'm pretty sure I killed my old motherboard that way. I was super careless though when trying to install a video card. It doesn't matter though. It was an OLD socket 7, 500Mhz, that would only accept 256MB of ram. Buh-hye! My new one I am wicked overly precautios with. I got the static wristband and everything. I also don't try hooking stuff up after having a beer or on my lap.

Static? whats static?? That was my line of thought a few years ago when i tried to install 128 MB of sdram into my P4 which only took rdram. Needless to say it didnt fit so i tried shoving it into the old comp and suceeded in breaking the ram and half the ram already present in my old comp :( luckily noone knew enough about this sorta stuff to notice :)
