If you have experience, and a skill, you can make a pretty good living in the Orlando area. Cost of living is cheap down there compared to up north here. I lived in Altamonte Springs for 3 years and loved it.

I live smack in the middle of orlando! The job market down here is ok, after all anyone can get a job at disney. The best part is that we dont have state taxes (taken out of paychecks)!

i dont wanna work in disney ... I'm in the IT field so I wanna continue to look in this area.
Obviosuly networking would definately help, but I know no one outside of philly!

taxes in philly kills us. 4 percent for city wages.

I live in Orlando and I work at Disney. You don't want to work there if you're planning on making any real money. I'm only there 2 days a week. It's fun but you get paid crap.

after all anyone can get a job at disney

and that's not true, I know plently of people Disney turned down:p

I went to school in Orlando, and let me tell you, if you are in IT it is NOT the place to be looking for a job. A lot of people getting Engineering degrees there actually work in Melbourne and have a 2 hour commute.

I was developing software while in college working for someone we knew, good job except student level pay. (like $7 an hour back in early-mid 90's).

Once I graduated and started seriously going to other businesses and applying it took me over 4 months to find anything, and what I found then was pretty crappy.

In contrast when I went up to NY for a week (only 2 years after Orlando job hunt) and went on 4 interviews during that week I got 2 offers from those 4 interviews. I am now making more than 3 times what I was when I left Orlando, 5 years later.

sounds true. there are like 39593205209 tech schools trying to pump out all these people with degrees/certs and they all have nowhere to go. I would personally try somewhere else, plus, with the traffic around here, you'll be spending half your day in your car.

I lived in central Florida for 30 years. I got out of there because there are too many people there and the crime rate has skyrocketed in the past 20 years or so.

Central Florida will always be home to me, but it's not a nice place to live anymore.

Atlanta, Birmingham, Tampa, Jackson, New Orleans, Nashville, Knoxville, Savannah, Macon, Mobile, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Columbus, Shreveport, Memphis, Huntsville, etc.

Lots of places with warm climates. Tech industry is always dependant upon city.

About 2 years ago I was thinking of moving to Orlando because my sister lived in Apoka. But then the great IT overload happened and IT jobs were dropping everywhere.

Now I don't think of Orlando as a good place to go down south with IT jobs. Atlanta and surrounding area is still bustling. So I'm looking into moving there but I might just have to stay here in Chicago for a little while longer....whoopie :(

I'll be moving to the Orlando area in September, as my fiancee will be attending flight school at the Delta Academy in Sanford.

I'm a new college graduate with a degree in communications, looking to work in PR or event planning - anyone know how the market is for my skills?

I live in Orlando...the east side near UCF. I don't know what jemcam was saying when talking about the crime rate, It is very safe living here. The worst crimes are usually at apartments and are due to drunk college kids. I work for the Army's Simulation Training and Instrumentation PEO. There are a good amount of tech jobs here, mostly dealing with simulation/defense. Lockheed Martin has two large campuses in Orlando, and pretty much every other company in that field you can think of is here. The weather is nice (although a little too hot) and there is always a lot to do. The job market is tough eveywhere, but is no worse in Orlando.

I was just up in Huntsville, AL a few weeks ago for work. I like it up there. Nice weather, mountains, etc. The job market there is very similiar to here due to the defense jobs in/around Redstone Arsenal.

Right now I'm going to school in Gainesville. Been here for about 5 years. Every time I go down to Sanford it looks a little different; a lot of development going on. I usually drive through Mt. Dora on the way home and it looks like a nice quiet town.

If you are intent on moving to Florida I would recommend Tampa. It has really exploded recently. Plus while the heat, humidity, and storms there are insanely bad, the air there is not quite as humid and a lot less stagnant than Orlando. And you will probably run into old friends. -- There are seriously like 100,000 ex-philadelphians in the Tampa bay area, maybe more. Of course, I would recommend against moving to Florida altogether.

I don't see a big crime problem though, I've lived here all my life. Now traffic, that can get pretty bad at times.
