Anyone live in/near or know about Sayreville, NJ?

So my job hunt seems to be heating up. We live in TX and hate it, and I'll be interviewing for an I&C Tech job at a power plant in Sayreville, NJ. Does anyone here live there, near there, or know anything about this town?

I'd like to hear the good and bad so don't hold back. TIA for any info you all can give me.
 
The only thing I know about it is that Starland Ballroom is there. There are some decent concerts there.
 
Im about 20 minutes north of Sayreville...

The Good:
Easy access to NYC.. Les than 30 minutes drive and plenty of trains
Bon Jovi is originally from Sayreville
Plenty of malls around
Some decent strip clubs in the area
Decent clubs around surrounding towns
Suburbia which is close to a major city
Atlantic City less than 1.5 hours away
Jersey Shore lass than 30 minutes away

The bad:
Crowded
Small town cops SUCK
Housing is very expensive
TAXES are high
Turnpike and Parkway are toll roads

Ill get back to you if i can think of more

But, um why on earth would you want to move from a warm weather climate to NJ winters?

i know sayreville ok. it is just north of central NJ. it is mb 20 minutes from the coast. it has easy access to NJ Turnpike, GSP and 287. it is probably 1 hour from atlantic city. mb 30 minutes from NYC depending on traffic.

i think it is a decent place to live.
 
Thanks for the info guys. I've been to the sayreville website and the town seems nice from what I can tell.

Negative info is appreciated, but from my point of view:
Sayreville has a population less than 50k. I lived much of my life in Va Beach.
Agreed. But I live in a small town now.
I'll have to check into the housing issue.
My taxes are high everywhere I've lived. 🙁
Toll roads suck.

I did do a cost of living comparison between where I live now and that area of NJ at salary.com and as it turns out at the same rate of pay I will experience a net change of income of almost $5K if I move my family there. I'll be getting an actual pay raise if I get and take the job so my quality of living should go up.

And why would we want to move? The winters here in north TX are miserable. It's very cold and icy. My wife and I were both born in upstate NY so we're genetically suited to cold winters. And the climate there is much more conducive to my triathlon training than TX is. It's too fscking hot here in the summer to run in the daylight. And it's a 30 minute drive to the closest olympic sized pool so my swim training has suffered.

That's what I'm thinking at this time. What do you all think about that stuff?
 
Sayreville may only have 50k but you're talking about one of the mostly densely populated areas of the country. Traffic is horrible....I drove it every day for almost a year when I was in the area doing contract work and it's enough to drive a sane person crazy. Does the cost of living calculator consider that you'll now have to pay state income tax as well as a higher sales tax? NJ car insurance rates are some of the worst in the nation.

Cost of living in general is much higher in NJ than in Texas. Higher taxes, higher insurance etc. etc. Sayreville in general is a decent area depending on your age. As someone mentioned, a bunch of bars and clubs that're attended by the high school/college crowd. Traffic might suck depending on how far from work you are. Otherwise, NJ is a great place to live despite the jerks who claim otherwise after having visited once or twice.
 
Thanks for the feedback guys. So, the traffic is heavy and taxes are high. Got it. I'll keep the taxes in mind when it comes time to negotiate for my salary.

What about schools? I have 3 teenagers who'll need schooling. And how about the people themselves? Will we make friends quickly? I know that'll depend on us to some extent, but we've found out that being outsiders weighs heavily against us here in TX. Despite our best efforts, our friend base is pathetic. We are lonely here. 🙁

The traffic makes us angry. :| Seriously. When I'm driving, I'm consumed by hate. Every single person on the road is a moron and/or an asshole. Fortunately I only have to drive ~25 minutes a day.

Yeah, I've heard that Austin is cool. I live in Weatherford, me and my buddies (not from Texas) refer to this area as western Arkansas. It's that bad.

What part of NJ? North Jersey is totally and completely different than South Jersey. North Jersey is a toxic wasteland where the scum of the Earth live. South Jersey is more laid back. And some parts of South Jersey are out in the sticks, like you're in the deep south.
