well, Missouri is definitely a very different state from California. I am settling down in Springfield area and wondering what you Missourians do around here for leisure. (I am thinking of picking up golf)

EDIT: {add interest}

Canoe
Golf
and HUNTING!!! (really looking forward to this)
drinking
basketball

added: I am actually living in Marshfield. (that's like 20 minutes east of Springfield)

Go canoeing down one of the pristine spring-fed rivers?

there are many golfers

some people go to the lake of the ozarks in the summer

well, youre close to branson.
its like vegas...if it were run by ned flanders.

outdoorsy stuff is probably your best bet; lots of lakes around there for fishing if thats your thing.
i dont know, but id imagine there are some nice golf courses around there.

Wow, CA to Missouri? I 🙁 for you.

That's what I called it too.

In 71 I went the other way, Mo. to Cal.

Then on to Oregon! 🙂

Springfield is kind of boring and isolated compared to STL, KC or Columbia. If you like heavy music & metal, there is a big show with Six Feet Under at a local club/bar tonight, I think it's called the Rockwell now. It used to be called the Juke Joint.

Lots of outdoor activites. Fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, camping, etc....

Perfect place for that.

I second this. I go down to the Ozarks and Springfield area a few times a year to go hiking, camping and mtn biking. You aren't that far from the Lake of the Ozarks either, that can be a lot of fun in the summer.

Move back (and please take me with you 😀)

You can find some nice golf courses in the Saint Louis metro area, but I am not quite sure what is around Springfield. There is some real nice land down by Springfield. One thing I don't like about Missouri is the lack of places to ride motocross.

Springfield is quite different than L.A. My new roommate is from Modesto and he seems to like living in Saint Charles. I've been down to SMSU a few times to party, but there ain't much to do otherwise. If I can think of any fun things to do I will shoot you over a PM. Good luck

whao!!!!!!!! so many replies! I thought this thread would just sink to the bottom... 🙂

thanks guys.

anyways, I also want to hunt... anyone has experience with that? where should I start? (License? training?) I will visit Brass Pro Shop for more info.

and for the tree-huggers: no I will not hunt animals like Bears and Deers. Pheasants and Turkeys will do. (and no guns, bows and arrow for me 🙂 )

I grew up in Osage Beach 🙂

Stockton lake is great. Mostly sailboaters and fishermen in the summer, nice and relaxing. It's about 45 minutes northwest of springfield.

You will have to get a hunters ed card depending on how old you are and licenses. Bass pro is a good place to ask, just go to the customer service counter and they can hook you up (I used to work there in the gun department) . I think it's spring turkey season right now. Also get a map of all the conservation areas and public land around here, you can hunt there if you don't have any private land to hunt on.

Head over to the local Sheriff's department. They'll fill you in on all of Mo's laws and what not. You will need a hunting license (I think it's like $10 or $15 per year) and they can probably point you to some decent public hunting grounds. Since you are a bow hunter, the local conservation office might work too.

The Ozarks are a beautiful area and there's plenty of hunting as well.
