Anyone live(d) in Hawaii?

My friend was born and raised there and moved to East Coast just 2 years ago.

He doesn't recommend it unless you're rich and/or retired:

-Lots of people suffer from poverty and alcoholism outside of tourist areas (typical of most tourist areas in the world). Lots of ghetto areas and poor neighorhoods

-Everything has to be shipped by sea. Groceries, clothes, everything is 3-5x more expensive. Quite literally.

-You get island fever. You feel trapped. The island is no wider than the 3 hr car ride, that is without traffic.

-Probably little to no industry for most line of work.

My thought coming from the tundra was that I could get a post doc for a year there and switch things up a bit.

Your friends life must have sucked. I was born here and love it. I mean it's not perfect but no where really is. I've spent a lot of time in the Pacific Northwest and love it there but nothing beats coming "home". What do you consider rich? I've been making 80-100k since I was 22 and have never had any problems living or maintaining here.

Yeah, you're rich. 😛

Which island? We've been thinking about a place on Kauai.

I live on Oahu. 80-100k is like middle-class I guess. Equivalent of 60-80k in the mainland. So no, I'm not rich. After my divorce that kinda kicked my ass at the beginning of the year I'm in a rebound phase. Lol

If I could live a firmly middle class life on Maui all my life I'd be ok with that. I've been there a few times now though and just can't figure out where I would work. Granted my idea of what is middle class might change on Maui. Do I have a house? Water/Electric? Grill? Some kind of Internet? Outside awesomeness? I'm good.

I like it here. I guess if you've never lived anywhere else you would too. I think most of the places in the mainland are cheap except for San Francisco and New York. So hawaii seems pretty reasonable.
