Flame me all you want but a lot of what people have suggested is NOT techno. There is no "techno-trancey" it's just "trance" I'm sure.

FB slim, kinda techno but not really. Combination of a few styles. Same with groove armada, but I would classify groove armada as house

Chemical Brothers (dunno about their current stuff) but their earlier stuff definitely techno.

If you really want to know what techno sounds like, just pick up Text

Actually, yes. My old roommate listens to hippy jamband music, and he came across a band at a show that played "techno style" music with instruments. Naturally I don't know their name, so this reply is useless....but they do exist. It was pretty interesting actually.

As to the thread, I don't really listen to "techno" but I listen to a lot of trance. Get yourself Sirius and listen to Area 33 and TheBeat 36. Pretty much all you'll ever need.

(note: The Beat plays a lot of dance remixes of pop music too, you've been warned.)

underworld, kraftwerk, crystal method (live)

Unless you mean a typical drums/guitar/bass type setup...

Yea, it was a more standard "band", hence he saw it at one of his hippy shows.

the beat is absolute garbage and area 33 is only good when there are guest DJs like oakenfold or PVD, otherwise they play the same generic bass beat garbage over and over again. the electronic choice on sirius is disappointing :( good thing i have XM free for another 6 months

"the system" on XM is not too bad though, but rumor has it if they merge, the system will be going away :( :(

I have no problems with it. XM is terrible, I hope when the merger happens they don't screw with my channels.

I have never considered Aphex Twin, Kruder & Dorfmeister, or Squarepusher techno because I actually like them and I hate techno.

Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Gaetano Parisio, Ben Sims, Hardcell, Dave Clarke, Mateo Murphey, Marco Carolla, Adam Beyer, Cari Lekebusch, Thomas Krome, Danilo Vigorito
Fumiya Tanaka, Technasia, The Advent, Surgeon, Joel Mull, Deetron, Henrik B, Gaetek (gaetano paririo's other persona), Umek, Murat, Marco Bailey, Bryan Zentz, Jel Ford
Thomas Schumacher, UK Gold, The Cause, Cristian Vogel, Devilfish, Joey Beltram, Mhonolink, Markantonio, Oliver Ho, Grindvik, Hertz, Johan Bacto...

Thats a few off the top of my head. All of thoes artists are pure techno, not trance, house, hardcore etc.. pure, thumping, great techno.
The entire list are absolute top notch. The first line being mostly pure unadulterated gods of techno.

I won't even get into house or jungle or anything else, or else this post would be pages long.

On a side note, want to buy some vinyl? :)

Many of thoes artists you won't find on cd. Most of thoes produce tracks on vinyl and dj or put on live pa shows with equipment.
There are loads of live sets out there by thoes artists and I think by now many of them have myspace and their own sites with tracks and sets.
Much of their produced music is very tracky techno designed for dj mixing.
