Any bullet will stop an intruder. However, the larger the caliber, the bigger the mess. A powerful enough gun will not only enter the intruder's body, but exit it and make a mess on the wall, possibly even going through the wall and into your neighbor's house (if you have a .50 action express or something like that.)

In terms of what the OP is looking at, there wont be a big difference in terminal ballistics.

Meh. If you're looking for an inexpensive 9mm pistol, I recommend CZ or a Springfield XD. Also, keep in mind that resale on quality guns is very good, and you will lose the money you save versus, say, a Glock or Sig when it comes time to resell your gun.

im buying this used.. I think she wants like $300 maybe?

Get a taurus revolver.

Yeah actually if you've never shot...a revolver would probably be best for you to start with. I would at LEAST go to a range that has the gun you want (Like the XD .40...most should have that) and actually shoot the gun before you purchase it. Sometimes they just don't fit your hand like you think so you really really should go rent and shoot first.

As for why I chose those, especially with the silencer, I have no idea.
I do know that the 9mm is ideal and the ammo is cheap(?)
As for the Desert E, I don't know, but I think it would be fun to go out somewhere in a field and obliterate small targets and free throw range 😉

Any recommendations? Only concealed weapons.........My friend gave me an AK! 🙂
First of all:

For the cost of owning a surpressed weapon, you could easily buy two nice handguns. I don't know the exact requirements, but I'm pretty sure you need a $300 tax stamp just to buy the silencer - then of course you have to buy the silencer after that.

Second of all, the Desert Eagle is a horrible, horrible handgun. It jams if you limp-wrist it (which you probably will if you don't fire handguns very often), is heavy, and ammunition is expensive. It's probably the worst choice for a handgun ever. I can't see any reason to own one, because most gun owners "in the know" will think you just wasted money buying it. I guess you could impress idiots and people who's only firearms experience comes from video games though.

As for "9mm is ideal" - the advantages include low price and recoil, plus you can get fairly high capacity magazines. If you're buying one for personal protection, I personally think there's better calibers out there.

So here's what I'd reccomend to a first-time handgun owner.

First of all, take a firearms safety course.

Secondly, go to a range that rents guns and try a few to see what you like.

9mm or .40 caliber: Springfield XD.

45ACP: Springfield Full-Sized or Champion 1911.

What is the price difference between 9mm and .40 rounds? I'll be target shooting and personal protection.
Wal-mart sells 100 rounds of 9mm for $10.96, and 100 rounds of .40 for 16.96, if I remember correctly. FMJ rounds.

that's a pretty significant difference.

a 9mm would stop someone robbing/trying to kill me right???

Well It'll also depends on the type of ammo, as hollowpoint 9mm rounds do a lot more damage than a .40, IIRC. I remeber seeing seeing a video where someone shot a watermelon with a 45 and 9mm hollow tips and the 45 blew the back out but the hollows shreded the thing. I could have this backwards though, correct me if I'm wrong.
No round is a guarenteed stopper, but 9mm .40 and .45acp hollow points in the right load can all perform relatively similar. I like 9mm because its quicker for follow up shots and magazines have a higher capacity than the larger rounds. 147gr rangers for me please.

hmm... I want .40 just because it'sbigger... bleh

The fact that 9mm is cheap is more important than you'd think - because you're going to have to spend a lot of time at the range before you can hit anything with a handgun. You can argue about caliber and stopping power endlessly from all sides - but in the end shot placement is king. Big rounds may be more lethal in theory, but you'll take down an intruder a whole lot faster with a single 9mm slug at center mass than you will with 7 .50s embedded in the wall to the bad guy's left.

So:

Buy the biggest caliber you can afford to shoot often.

Shoot often, learn to shoot well, and get to know your gun/round.

Defend yourself with the gun/round you know you can shoot.

An excellent point that I think most people gloss over. Someone was telling me how well protected they are with their nightstand gun filled with black talons yesterday. All I could think of was how terrible their aim probably was and the unknown probability of a ftf/fte.

I'd get her a Ruger SP101 in .357 it's built like a tank and reliable 5 shots in 357 or 38 special. No safties or stovepipes you pull the trigger it goes bang if it doesn't you pull it again. Load it with some Gold Dots and you're ready. 🙂

Is handgun ownership 21 yrs old across the board or do certain states have it 18?

Varies by state.

I thought it was federal.

A person under 21 cannot buy a handgun from an FFL but depending on state law they may be able to own one. (Like if a parent buys their son/daughter a pistol)

Ok, yeah, that's what I thought.

If its for protection purposes...why not get a shot gun instead... They are easier to use and acurately and one shot will likely incapcitate a person at close range?

Guns Are for Pussies -311 (It's a Band)

311 - Guns (Are For Pussies) Lyrics

Here comes the thunder down under, we're natural wonders
Night falls when weleave all you feel is the hunger
Sunrises of people all shapes and sizes
Dig onthe decade and realize it's funky
No matter this rude boy stll got that swagger
My ears have heard all these crews but we're badder Interracial,
special,
positive beings I am I be a cool awakwening
It's getting hectic the metrics thebody electric
Everybody in worn out blue jeans or tacky dresses
This is the citywe've reached we've come to
Go unrecognized on the corner or make moves
All thelights are red all the poets are dead
A familiar nightmare appears in my head
Times are a changin' myself I'm rearrangin'
Dream eight-thousand-five-twelve allblazin'
Born to act out,
Paranoid with a gat
Born to act out,
Think you knowwhere it's at
Born to act out,
But you're lookin' like a sissie
Born to act out,
Guns are for pussies I'm not from Philly but some say I'm a
blunt
That's justthe way I am and no I'm not going to front
And yes I took a trip to find outabout the ways of big
City seedy bars and drugs that make you feel ******
Prettyolder women in skirts conversation frisky
Stinking cigarettes and plenty ofbourbon whisky
Sad classical music on the jukebox of doom Hollywood Blvd.
Barflyfrolic room
Tomb of lost souls some beyond salvage
Some just having fun openingsteam valvage I was one becoming
the other hellbent to discover
Had to pull upthe reigns or else smother
Take it brother all the way and then you're scared
Don't want to be unprepared
You're getting paranoid,
And then guns are shared
You guys think you're hard,
But you're in fear of getting harmed
I fear no manand
I am unarmed
