Im not bragging in any way shape or form... I dont think i will do nearly as well on a real test as some online test...
Psychologists or psychometricians (overseen by psychologists) are generally the only people who give "certified" IQ tests, yes. And by certified, I mean those that are scientifically validated and accepted by various organizations, such as the college board (used in determining testing accomodations), school districts, etc. Test books that you could buy at a bookstore might give you a very large and general range for your IQ, but there's too much potential for intertest variability to place much confidence in the scores.
I personally administer various IQ, academic ability, memory, reading, attention, and various other tests on a weekly basis. The cost of a psychoeducational evaluation (a very, very thorough process) at the clinic located on my graduate school's campus is around $350 or so. I'm sure you could find a psychologist willing to give you just the IQ component for that price or less.
And just to address another post in this thread, there are various IQ tests that have been normed down to very young ages, although they all measure slightly different abilities and on slightly different scales. But you could expect to get a "standard" IQ measure from children as young as 4 or 5, I believe. You do have to keep in mind, though, that their IQ score is in relation to other test takers of their same age group (as would be yours), not to all test takers in general.
