I'm interested in playing around with a small diesel engine, like a 2, 3,or 4 cylinder. My guess is that it would have to come from an import (VW, Mitsubishi or something) or a forlift.

Any ideas?

Check your local VW dealership

On a serious note, lots of tractors come with diesel motors.

Sure. I'm pretty sure these are all out of your budget, but they're perfect for your project, and in Nebraska.

I believe our was an '84. 4 banger stick, got awesome mileage. Hell, the only reason we got rid of the car was because the entire body was coming apart. The thing had well over 230K miles on it. Shock towers busting , body rusting, everything else falling apart. Except for that damn motor. I'll bet it is still running today.

Small displacement diesels meh.

Get some real displacement and generate some electrical power! Sell a few hundred kW back to your utility!
