I know these exist and I have not been able to find one. I have a fairly nice Onkyo reciever with 5.1 output, but it is only a Prologic receiver and I don't really feel like buying a whole new one just for DD. Anyone seen one of these... Also, where is a good place to get stereo components online @ good prices..? Thanks in advance...

I believe yamaha makes a dvd player with a dolby digital decoder built-in

One requirement though is that your reciever is dolby digital ready

Most dvd players I've heard that have built in decoders suck a@@ in the sound department. There's a big difference between the DD decoders built into players and the ones in receivers.

A much better alternative is the seperate DD decoders that Sony, Yamaha and Denon sold for a while. These are still available if you don't mind looking on egay or one of the home theater forum websites. These go in between the dvd player and receiver.

yeah I've got a really nice Yamaha Prologic receiver hooked up to a Toshiba DVD player with built in DD. For comparison, my roommate has a Yamaha receiver with built in DD hooked up to a Sony DVD player. Basically, his system blows mine out of the water. But I don't really want to plunk down 500 bucks for a new receiver :(

A good Dolby Digital/DTS decoder is the Technics ACH500D. Do a search on egay and you'll probably find one.

Of course with this kinda thing, you gotta trust your own ears. Go to a Soundtrack or something and listen to onboard DD vs outboard DD. Listen for yourself to see if you can see a difference.

IMHO, for the money its worth getting DD on the receiver.

Do a search for the Technics...reviews are good and you can pick it up for less than $150.

Did somebody say Shiva?? Best money I ever spent on my home theater.

I never would have believed there was that much difference between DD built into a player and a seperate DD receiver until we swapped back and forth one night at a friends house. Never could figure out why my system just destroyed his until then.

He bought a new receiver the following week. :)
