Anyone know when recordable HD-DVD drives are going to be available for the PC?

I want to buy an HD-DVD camcorder but without the media to transfer it to, I'm not going to have much use for it. And I'm not about to keep HD-DVD recordings on my hard drive indefinitely. That's just not practical.

Oh I'm sure.

haha...man those things are expensive, you would think for $850 for the plextor one you would get free shipping...

i guess for the short term a usb2/1394 externa hdd is the way to go.

which camcorder are you going to go with?
Even though I despise Sony (the main reason I don't want to buy a Blu-Ray drive), I'm looking at this camcorder.

I'd be a little nervous about how reliable HD-DVD or Blu-Ray storage is. Over that past ten years, I haven't been impressed by the reliability of burned CDs or DVDs. It'd be a shame to lose all your movies. :(

nice, i feel the same way but do like their camcorders. i can't understand why their batteries are so f*cking expensive. i have an old sd mini-dv camera, i think the pc5 and indoors it does ok considering the size of the lens, but outsided, it was like news quality. i think i need to break it out and see what it looks like on my hdtv....see how clear the s-video is....it may surprise me....

good luck and i too can't wait for hd-dvd to become available. too bad it will probably take drives that do blu-ray and hd (if that is even possible) along with players that do both before this really takes off, or one technology really owns the other, but who knows. i think sony thought the ps3 would take blu-ray to the next level, but i read somewhere that the actual amount of shipped ps3s into the u.s. was only like 125K-140K, far less than the 400K we were all told. they are really behind with this stuff and are slippin, especially with the deal on the xbox360 w/ a cheap (relatively speaking) hd-dvd rom upgrade. i know when i pick up a hd-dvd player i will probably pick up the xbox360 as it is close the same price as the standalone units.
