Anyone know what the white dip is that's served in Mexican Restaurants?

I moved to southern VA a few years ago and all of the Mexican restaurants around here bring out a white dip with the chips and salsa. It's not a cheese dip. The closest thing I can think of is ranch dressing, but it has more bite and tang to it.

Anyone know what it is? Or better yet, how to make it? I think the stuff is great.

I tried the almighty google, but no one has a name for it and the recipes for Mexican "white dip" are all over the place.

It's not Mexican.

Most of the Mexican food served in the USA is awful hard to find south of the border.

This is what I thought of, but he claims it isn't cheese.

I'm assuming they served the OP is ranch, sour cream, and some extra stuff.

I think he's trying to say that the mexican food served in the US isn't served in Mexico. I understood what he meant.

I watch Anthony Bourdain so I am officially a foodie, so I instinctively bag on any American food.

Most likely, if the restaurant is very authentic, it's...white mexican cheese dip, made with queso blanco or queso fresco.

MOST of the Mexican restaurants here add a bit of the fine white powdery queso fresco as a topping on foods. Not very "cheesy," but it's good.
