3.7 quarts, but I always put the full 4 in. It ends up about 3/16 inches too high on the dipstick, but no big deal. You should go to the dealership and pick up some aluminum press washers for the oil plug. They're about 50 cents each, and Honda recommends that it is changed every oil change. Also, the Honda oil filters ARE better than most others.

Uno mas thing:

If your friend is the meticulous type, he should use Castrol GTX (regular) or Mobil 1 (synthetic).

If he is a cheap ass, he should just use anything other than Pennzoil. That's definitly the worst brand out there.

Garfang, I'm willing to bet that honda doesn't make their own filters and they are relabed's of another brand. Just fill it until it says full on the dipstick. And use a Mobil 1, AC/Delco, or Wix filter ;)

Yes, the filter is probably outsourced, but it's better than a $1.99 Fram or something cheap like that. You can tell just by holding them. I'm sure that a Mobil 1 filter is fine, too.

Ok quick poll:

What is the best motor oil (non-synthetic) and the best (synthetic)?

I agree, if its not a Fram, its better ;)If you're bored here is a really really good read on oil filters where the guy takes a bunch apart :)

As far as oils, I always buy Mobil 1 synthetic, they've been in the synthetic business the longest so they have plenty of experience. GOod enough for porche, good enough for me ;)

As for oil- on the cheap side (the only side I know!) I use Advance Auto Parts Brand. It is Valvoline rebadged (I think Valvoline owns Adv or the other way around) and it is very cheap too! The only thing I like about Fram is that new black grip they put on them. It makes it very easy to take off (only need a glove- no wrench) which is nice when your under a Honda Accord since they put the filter on the bottom, behind the FI?! Just my $.02...

don't put synthetic in a worn out motor, it will leak, ooze, and burn away too rapidly.

Thanks for the info guys. We ended up putting in around 4 1/2 quarts, which brought the dipstick up to the full line. I thought that was a little too much, but I doubt an extra half quart will do any harm. The car was parked on a very slight incline, so I think that is why it was reading a little low. Btw, he showed up with Exxon Superflo oil and a Fram filter. The oil was about 99 cents which was the cheapest they had lol. He's kind of cheap like that, oh well it's his car not mine.

uhhh... it is bad to overfill an engine. It will cause the seals to fail due to excess pressure.

Yeah I was thinking of that too, but I think that would happen if you overfill it WAY too much, ie. putting 6 quarts into that engine. this was just 1/2 quart or so extra.

it really depends on how strong the seals are. a friend blew his with 1 quart extra, he was on an incline also.

The real problem with extra oil is that the oil flowing will foam up. Foamy oil mean it has air, and that air takes up the space where you want lubrication. This is the reason that frequently you can take a car with noisy hydraulic lifters, and if it is overfilled with oil, drain a bit and the lash adjusters will quiet :)
