seriously, i've had this happened to me and i traced it back to drinking some hot temperature hot tea. It burned my tongue and taste buds and hurts like you described. Did you drink anything that hot?

I do remember eating some pizza yesterday at lunch, and it was quite hot, but this didn't happen until later on that day. Maybe it could have been it...but what would explain the random single swollen buds at other times? This seems more related to that, for some reason.

Well, the pizza was pretty damn hot...I suppose there is a possibility that was the cause. But what the hell does the rest of your post mean? 🙂

Okay, I'm actually going to post a serious reply, as if I were the original poster I'd want a real answer.

It's probably nothing to worry about. I personally have something called "geographical tongue". I was at my dentist a few months ago and I asked him what the hell was wrong with my tongue. He asked if it hurt at all, and I said no. He said that it looks a lot like geographical tongue. I have a mild case of it. Sometimes it's worse than others, but it's usually on the mid-back portion of the tongue. So if you do a google search on geographical tongue, you're going to find some pretty nasty pictures of it. Mine isn't quite that bad, but at least I know what's wrong with it. It's also not an STD, because uhm, well, i'm 100% geek baby, and I have yet to see any real action. Geographical tongue happens to about 1% or so of the population, some worse cases than others, and there is no cure for it. In some cases there are iron deficiencies (sp?) so taking multi-vitamins help. It didn't for me really 🙁

I also sometimes have what your tongue looks like. I actually do right now. I feel like my tongue is a woman on the rag or something. It changes its mood whenever it feels like it and says "hey, I'm going to be like this today". It's really annoying, but I cope with it.

My tips to you:

See a doctor. There may be some sorts of mild topical creme steroids that will fix this problem. Personally I haven't done this for my problem.
Brush your teeth, but don't scrub. Use your toothbrush on your tongue.
Then rinse with hydrogen peroxide, but spit it all out.. it's not good for ya. This is a common practice.
Rinse with water.
Rinse with mouthwash.

Don't stick your god damn tongue out.

Very interesting. I'd say I most likely don't have that, because it hurts like a mustharfurcker, but you never know. Since I've only had it since yesterday, I'll wait a day or two and see if it clears up. Then I'll go to a doc. 🙂
