anyone know what folder iphone photos are stored to on the pc you sync with?

Photos do not sync to Windows from an iPhone. The phone mounts as a plug and play camera from which you can copy your pictures.

that is horrible news considering i had an iphone with some fantastic pictures on it that crashed and has been wiped (i assume firmware recovery/reset or some such)

i wonder if i can do a file recovery off the iphone to retrieve "deleted" files like i can on other storage devices...

It's possible, though I must say, unlikely without a bunch of effort. Most recovery tools will need a mount point in order to recover. The iPhone does not give you that. You'd have to find a way to access the file system and run the software on it.
