We had it at our high school cafeteria. It was the most popular thing since it was cheap, filling, and could be eaten quickly.

It's pretty much fries with cheese and gravy.

It kinda tasted nasty to me.

There's a little mom-n-pop shop called Fritz European Fryhouse in Vancouver, BC where it's made right. It's on the south side of Davie about a block west of Burrard.

Western? Guy, you been smoking some of what they grow out there? It's a Quebec dish, and according to my friend who grew up in Monteral, that's the only place where they do it true justice. Never heard of it being really popular outside there, though you can get it.

Vic is right about the heart attack on a plate, though :D A guy my father worked with had to have a quad bypass after eating that stuff for lunch for years.

You don't know what you're missing. They are incredible bad for you, and look like they would taste bad...but are actually great.

My girlfriend is part French-Canadian.
"Don't mind her. She's French-Canadian. Some days she's Canadian. Can be quite pleasant. Today she's obviously French."
You lived in Canada for how long and you only saw poutine once? Weird!!

I used to like getting the poutine at Harvey's when I didn't have money for a burger. Poutine and soda would do me right. But then the price of poutine went up to like $4 or something stupid.

Harvey's + Second Cup + Tim Horton's = PWNAGE Canadian fast food!!!

You're American, does that make you fat by default?

Aren't Canadians kind of fat, too? This entire continent is pretty fat.
Yep, Canadians are equally as fat.

You don't travel much in the US do you?

While there are a good number of overweight Canadians, we don't even come close to the numbers I saw last time I was down south. :p

Last I looked, the percentages for obesity were actually pretty close. Maybe I misread it...

You completely missed the point of the post...

Not really. I know what you were saying. However, a lot of people like to say that Americans are obese, so I was wondering if Canadians are the same.

Thanks, those numbers are a lot closer than I would have figured.

New York Fries makes good poutine. Every other restaurant I've had it at just uses mozzarella cheese on crappy fries with gravy. Blech.

I won't touch the stuff myself, but poutine caused an argument between my ex-gf and I. We were discussing dinner when she mentioned she had eaten poutine earlier. I joked, "Well, that's you for the day - there's something like three thousand calories in one of those bad boys."

She started crying, insinuating I thought she was fat.

Ugh.
